Travel Republic charging for cancellations

The failure of Kiss Flights and Goldtrail, along with XL, Globepsan, and others before it, continue to highlight that people do not understand what they are booking when they use online travel agents.
Sites like Travel Republic, Bookable Holidays, lowcostholidays etc most of the time do not sell you a package holiday. They sell you a flight, a hotel, and some transfers, all booked through different suppliers. This is no different to if you made the arrangement yourself directly with the different suppliers.
People still assume they are booking package holidays - a very different beast, where everything is through one supplier and its all protected. If you want a package, go to Thomson, or Thomas Cook. You'll probably pay more - but then, you pays your money you takes your choice.
It is in the T&Cs on agents websites, I suspect however people are happy to just book based on the price. Not totally the publics fault I guess, as these sites just display ABTA and ATOL logos and people are happy with that. But always read the T&Cs before booking, and understand what it is you are booking.
In some cases there have been agents that have waived cancellation charges as a good will gesture. Considering your time scales it would be nice if TR would do so - maybe you'll get some joy. Its may not TR levying it, its may be the accomodation provider. Try and find that out. But ultimately, you agreed to the T&Cs when booking.0 -
I also booked flights with KISS through TR, about 48 hours before they went bust.
As it happened, I booked flights, hotel and transfers all through TR but separately.
I was lucky enough to see what happened with KISS within the first couple of hours and to have the money so I could rebook flights with Easyjet straight away. TR have been great at amending my transfer booking for free, with different times on the outbound flight and different day for the inbound flight.
So to speak as I find - TR were very helpful.
I have yet to see how they handle the CAA refund though .... :cool:0 -

Glad it worked out for you.
I think they would have helped me too if I paid them more money...0 -

what is the complaint about?
you booked a hotel.
you cancelled it.
T&C's state that if you cancel your hotel, charges will apply!
in all fairness, can't see you getting your cancellation fee back, but good luck.I used to be a Travel Agent Used to be a travel agent for 23 Years, but now out of the industry. However I will help with what i can.0 -

I am a travel agent and agree with you , i have tried to tell people that theire need to read t&c but don't listen till its to late, we only ever sell package holidays, done with our atol licence, I had to change somebodies flights with kiss that was booked last year before we put them on stop sale and it took all of 2 mins , just rang customer asked what flight she wanted. We take the extra cost and claim it back via atol.
so please be careful all you need to ask is WHO IS THE CONTRACT WITH !0 -
