I am trying to set up my Netgrear wireless router with my new laptop. In the above section, i select the Network name and then proiperties. I enter a network key and verify it, and then OK it. But when I go back in, it is showing a shorter key (9 characters) and I dont know what it is, and therefore I cannot enter the same key in the router set up. Does anyone know why this is?
Also, I am chooosing WPA-PSK and then TKIP, is this correct?

First you need to get yourself a long random pass-phrase from here. Save this into a notepad file so that you can transport it to any other machines that you wish to be able to connect to your network. You enter this into your router and then enter the same pass-phrase into the other PC's (but it will be shown as a different number of character i.e. 9 that you can't read). WPA-PSK and then TKIP is the best option to use. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

Despite it only showing 8/9 'blobs' it has remembered what you typed in. It's a security feature which disguises the length of the key. Just type or paste the same key into the router's wireless config.
Yes, WPA-PSK and TKIP are correct, certainly for my Netgear DG834G as it only supports TKIP, not AES.0 -
The heading should say Properties....
Anyway I followed all the instructions. And I moved the router into a different room, one which has no electrical items which may interfere.
The laptop is telling me I am connected to the network name which I assigned. Sometimes it says the signal strength is Low. Even when it says the strength is Excellent, I still cannot connect to the internet. I open up IE and just get the 'page cannot be displayed' message.
This is driving me nuts. Any ideas?0 -
does start, run, cmd
ping 192.168.0.1 work wirelessly?
if not, there is a problem with the encryption key, or windows settings.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -

It says that the request timed out.
Any ideas? Idiots guide please!0 -
The best idiots guide I can do is in the links above..it was written for your router..
Not sure what you have done.
If you have setup encryption, you need to wire the laptop up, do an ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew
then go to 192.168.0.1
goto the wireless settings, copy the encyption key into the clipboard (control C), then paste this into your windows config. Make sure there are no quotation marks in the keyEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -

Will give it a go tomorrow. I followed the instructions step by step and was overjoyed when i saw that I was connected. No idea why i couldn't actually see a page though!
Many thanks.0 -
Even though it says connected in the wireless settings, it doesn't mean it's talking.. usually means that the encryption key doesn't match.
if you post the output of an
start
run
cmd
ipconfig /all >c:\1.txt
notepad c:\1.txt
command, we can tell you if it is connected or not.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0
