Broken computer phone call and money taken from account

Options
May be connected or maybe not, had a phone call from a woman yesterday saying my computer is broken, I told her it wasn't.
She tried to tell me it was and asked what system it used and how old ect, told her its on Windows 95 and is 35 years old so she got confused and went off the phone! Today I have had money taken from my account yet I didn't hand over any card details or even my real name, told her a fake address and postcode and the wrong phone number. On withdrawal it says Microsoft have had the money so ringing the bank tomorrow, anyone got any ideas? only 9.19 gone but thats not the point as it says card payment and I haven't made any or got any recurring payments set up.

This is a common scam but not sure how they set up payments and why so little. Did you let them install any software?

Nope, told them I keep computers down the cellar and use candlelight to work with and had run out of candles! She never even asked for card info, or birthdate or anything, which surprised me as I was expecting her to. She told me she would ring me this morning when I have candles but never did so. Don't understand how she could have got details, computer wasn't even turned on at the time.

    Hey,

Did it say it was for Microsoft Tech Net by any chance??? My boss had a random transaction on his credit card for Microsoft Tech Net and then a few weeks later we were sent an invoice for it with my name and address at the top of it! I've never used his card before and the date it was taken was when I was in Turkey! We think it came from a key logging programme on an old work pc and whoever has the details has just got round to our details now! I would definitely run avg and make sure there is nothing nasty hiding on your pc!

I think the phone call was probably just a coincidence!

Oh and the invoice was not connected to Microsoft at all! Random phone number that went through to an 'adult' chat line etc and an address for Germany. The delivery address was for a made up person in Chorley as well.

    Hope this helps!

Assume that this is a wind up ....:rotfl:

Nope not a wind up, its what I was saying to her cos I had heard vaguely about a scam re broken computers so I was saying this stuff to see if she believed it, and the phone number bit I told her she had the wrong last digit to confuse her, probs thats why they never phoned back. Couldn't believe she stayed on the line so long with me saying these things! Maybe they don't have a cure for 35 year old computers operated by candle light.......
On a lighter note, have cancelled card and bank are looking into the transaction.

Is this little piglet telling porkies??

Nothing stacks up in your post which would enable this random caller to guess your account details.

No I am not telling lies, cannot imagine why you would think I would be bored enough to make up such a random tale!
Facts are - get phone call, think its a scam, wind them up with daft details, check bank, money gone. Simple.
how it was done I wish I knew, always could be totally unrelated but what are the chances of that?
Thanks for the helpful comments by the way :D
