Awwww I have always wanted to go on a narrowboat holiday!

Have a smashing time and since it is very reasonably priced, do treat yourself to a few pub meals!

Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).
  • Hi Tine,

As you may have guessed from my name I live on a boat, and have done for the last 9 years or so.

I manage to do the vast majority of my cooking from scratch and have even produced a 3 course meal for 8 people on occasion - although finding somewhere for everyone to sit while they eat it is a different matter!

I would say that anything you can cook at home can be done on a boat (although slo-cookers and breadmakers are out).

But I agree with a previous poster that you're on holiday so make life simple.

Oh, and if you get fed up of cooking then there are always loads of lovely canal-side pubs....

Where are you hiring your boat from?

    Edited to say:
Just looked at the website containing details of the boat, it looks like it was made by the same boatbuilder as our current boat. Nice part of the country too. I know you'll have a lovely time - you can't help but slow down and relax when your maximum speed is 4mph!

I envy you so much, I keep looking longingly at the narrow boats parked up in Gloucester Docks, but DH just laughs. I guess it must be my gypsy heritage showing :)

We are having a week in a caravan in Wales next May though so I am really looking forward to that.
Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

Thanks all and yes we are both really really lookingforward to getting away for a week and just taking life easy - honest the cooking doesn't bother me it really doesn't :)

Just can't wait to get away!

Well I have all the papers etc for the holiday now and a full inventory (they even leave you a fresh carton of milk and one of juice to "get you on your way" :))

I think I'll leave the SC at home to be honest, I've managed to build a menu without it and this well be just fine :) I won't need to take any kitchen implements or pots and pans - I'll just take a few basic cleaning bits cos I can't help myself! :D It does say they are available in the boat so I might not... hmmmm

I have to say everything looks to be very good so far! Although I see no mention of a wine rack... I mean really!!! How am I supposed to survive!!!!

Ooh, Tine - I'm so envious! Mr Piglet and I had a week on a narrowboat in May this year (and another one back in 2002) and I can honestly say they are two of the best holidays we have ever had... :j

Everybody is super-friendly on the canals (its like a mini-community, where everyone is willing to help you if you need it) and every boat you pass, people nod and say "good morning", etc. Also, Boatie_Bird is right - at 4mph life really does take on a different relaxed feel..and its amazing! After just a couple of days, we had relaxed so much that it felt like we had already been on holiday for a week.:T And its also very strange that although you can be quite close to "main roads", the canal feels so peaceful and quiet and unspoilt.;)

Foodwise, we also had the "fully-equipped" kitchen with fridge, cooker and microwave, and we had no problems at all - we just cooked the same sort of thing as we would do normally at home (albeit easy and uncomplicated stuff - pasta, jackets potatoes, soups, etc - 'cos it was a holiday!:p). We also noticed that the canalside pubs were very reasonable/competitive in price for when we wanted to eat out.

    Have a lovely holiday!:D
