Old Style holidays

Options
I'm going on an OS holiday! Well after much negotiation with the OH we have agreed on the fact we NEED a holiday (our first that hasn't been visiting parents). I refused to go abroad because we couldn't agree on an MSE holiday (£500+ per person and diving school etc etc etc just can't justify it) so someone suggested a barge holiday... did a load of resarch and it's booked! in a few weeks time we're off on the waterways of England. It's going to cost £500ish for both of us AND the dog. (So no kennelling costs)
BUT I now have to cook on our holiday  DOH
Ok with any luck OH might catch a few crayfish in the rivers but I doubt that we can live off them for a week lol!

I might be able to pick a few things along the rivers/canals but probably not much in 3 weeks from now when we're going...

This is where your help comes in :) I will have basic cooking facilities but probably nothing like a slowcooker :rotfl: so ideas will be very welcome :) (Dunno if the thing has an oven either... will try to find out...)

Do you like tinned fish, we have that on holiday, OH has Tuna I have Mackeral, along with salads. No cooking just preparing involved and the same can be used for pic-nics.
  • My MIL used to take her pressure cooker on the narrow boats and cook as if she was at home, my BIL on the otherhand takes a tray of eggs, bread and more baked beans than you can shake a stick at.
There are of course plenty of canal side pubs.

alledgedly the boat has: A fully equipped kitchen including cooker and microwave

So I should be able to survive ;) I might be tempted to take the slowcooker, just depends on room in the car I guess... It's a coupe and there will be me, OH and the dog and all our gear :S

That btw includes a dog crate too (which I am still not sure about where is gonna fit on the boat... hmmmm)

Anyone wanna look at the boat it's at https://www.canalboatforhire.com

It even has a solid fuel fire (yay!!!) and is very luxurious and because it's outside the peak times it's very affordable :)

Anyway I'll let you all know if it's any good when we get back hehe

Penny-P I'll user your list as a "guide" I think :) Substitute the kids stuff for the dogs etc lol

Like the tinned fish idea... and jacket potatoes...

I might do a casserole at home on friday ready to take with us to the boat and then just nuke it in the microwave in the evening with some HM bread - Because I probably won't feel like cooking anything much on our first evening...

Agree with all the above advice but also remember it's a holiday. You don't want to be spending most of your time planning meals, cooking and washing up. You go on holiday to get away from all of that!

A few weeks ago I walked along a canal path near me and passed a couple who were cooking dinner on the towpath. They were using a single burner camping stove and having some kind of prawn and garlic dish. I don't know exactly what it was but it smelled fantastic! It was on the Lancaster canal so i guess they may have been Morecambe bay shrimps. My advice would be just keep it simple.

They could have been crayfish :) they are considered a pest if the are the signal crayfish and can be fished and eaten (they're yummy btw but let them hang out in a bucket of fresh water for a day or two before munching as the rivers can be questionable in water quality) Cook like big prawns :)

Saturn I know it's a holiday hun but to me a holiday means getting away from work - the mobile will be unanswered and only calls from the house/cat sitter will be answered :) I am looking forward to having the time to potter about and prepare the meals I think because at home even my OS meals end up feeling rushed :) OH can sit out side and steer or fish and we'll just slow our lives down for a few days

I have PMd you. Check with the hire boat company that you will be able to use the slow cooker - it depends on the 240V power supply that they have on the boat.

    Enjoy!
  • It sounds fantastic. As a small child our holiday used to be as a family with friends on their narrow boat (9 of us!). They were the best holidays ever. One thing we could never live without were bikes. They were essential items for popping off and getting a few extra odds and sods (and for getting away from the parents!)
My suggestion is dont rely on the fridge too much. They are fine for things like milk and spread but i wouldnt overload it with ready prepared OS meals. Other than that i would treat it like a normal kitchen.

    Have a lovely time!
