Old car high mileage thoughts?

I don't know if it's still true, but years ago I had a Peugot diesel, and a mechanic friend told me that Peugot had a reputation for building just about the best diesel engines in the world. Apparently a lot of other manufacturers used Peugot engines, and I think ( correct me if I'm wrong ) that pretty much all Citroens used the Peugot engine. So yes, Peugot diesel is a good bet as many others have said.0

consider the road tax cost.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but on pre-2001 cars, there are 2 tax bands for engines under/over 1.5l (this may have changed since I had a car that age) - the lower one was around £120 per year.
If you get a small diesel car post 2001, the road tax is likely to be £35 per year. Though it'll be difficult to get a car for £500 I would think.0 -
Your right but the marker was 1.6 not 1.5 (I have had 3 cars in my life, 2 x R reg and my 05 reg and I avoided 1.6 for that reason. Tho thanks for reminding me, I had forgotten how expensive the old system was compared to the new for good CO2 cars)The will to save every money saving penny we can0

If he has only just passed his test and he isnt fussy then a little Peugeot 106 may suit him well. (avoid the 206!).0

Cheers guys. Rather then start a new thread I'll ask here first. I fancy a peugeot for him. Now as Diesel starts at 1.5 and most 306 available in my price range are 1.9 but I did an insurance quote for both 1.5 and 1.9 and there only £20 apart! Couldnt believe it! So as its the same price the larger engine is back in which means there are some 206's available.
So my question, what would your preferance be? 206 or 306? My gut reaction is 206 due to its safety star rating as I expect our daughter (and any other new babies) would at some stage travel in it and my worry mummy head wants the 206 for that reason
Any views welcomedThe will to save every money saving penny we can0 -
If cost is the driver, compare depreciation, and tax as well as the insurance.
How does the price to buy compare as well?0
