Sorry if this has been asked a thousand times

Dh just got a job (YAY) and is going to need a car. Now we dont have much and we cant car share as he needs to work in 3 different sites.

So I figured get a high mileage car, 100k or over? With a long MOT. Bout £500?

But I wondered what your thoughts were on car model? He hasnt been driving long, since June, so I would prefer to keep the engine size low.

My initial reaction was VW but my peugeot 307 is at 85k now (cripes av doubled it in 2.5 years!) and, touch wood, I havent had a problem with it, (1.6 HDI if your wondering) so what are your thoughts on an old peugeot? Have a lucked out or is that the result you would expect from a fully serviced car?

My other thought were these 0% finance used car dealers. But am sure there are conditions I am yet to see or you cant get that on cars worth less then 6k or something.

Thanks all :T

    Peugeot 106 1.5 diesel.
Had one a few years now, it cost £475, and next to nothing since.
Bought it with 96K miles, now it's nearly at 130K. 1996 model.
    They'll keep going forever.

My Peugeot 405 was still going strong when it went for scrappage last year at 234,000 miles.
  • 306 Turbo diesel.

Pence to buy, pence to insure, pence to run. Don't rust, engines last forever. If you want something cheap, old and reliable Peugeot diesels normally tick all the boxes.

It'll be more fun to drive than your car too.

    Andy

I would not recommend getting a car on finance simply as you will using it mainly for work, so really, a cheap car that starts and stops is all you really want.

There are loads of cars to choose from around £500, some which you would be really surprised at.

Personally, I wouldn't go with a Peugeot but that is a personal option on the subject.
However, if you really have your mind set on one, how about a 306?! - Cheap to run and insure and repairs should be fairly easy, along side this maintaining it would be easier than a bigger car.

The best place to look for a half tidy car at this money would be a 'Private' sale as a trader will not be entertaining such a deal at this price for a good condition car.

I would use as a starting point either Gumtree or eBay, but be warned, make sure they are not a trader.
The way you can make sure they are not one is do a search on Google of their home/mobile telephone numbers and see if there E-mail address brings any clues.

You may even get a car a lot less than £500.

I saw a Fiat Bravo (Awful car!) for £150 the other day, 7 months MOT 1 months Road Tax Duty.
However, beware, buying to cheap a car must cause some questions to be asked as to why that car is being sold so cheaply.

Also, try having a look in your local AutoTrader, this will have some good buys in it also.

I hope you manage to find something and by the way, Congratulations on the new job !

Nah, nothing wrong with old Peugeots lol..... Plenty of minicabbers have stuck 400,000 on them old XUD engines and they're still chugging along.

The safety record is good with the 306 too, even the most basic first versions. Either that, if you want to spend less, look for an old TD Citroen ZX which is the same car as the 306TD, just smacked sharply, and firmly serveral times with the "ugly stick."

I was going to get a 306 GTi a few years ago, but it never went anywhere after I needed a family car!:rotfl:

You can pick a few good cheap ones up too, just had a look Gumtree, a Blue 306, with 5 Months MOT and 2 Months Road Tax Duty, 5 doors on a R plate, £350 or offers, states it needed a new tyre and a bit of a body paint touch up here and there otherwise good, and has 80K on it.

Depends if it's petrol of diesel though.

The petrols are not great, and best avoided. The 1.4 is about 10x slower than you'd ever expect it to be, even in such a small car.

    Yeah, heard that too.

This was years back, and at the time people wanting cars with the MOT out were not as common, hate to say it but I gave it away! :o
