Most libraries sell their old stock off too, so it could be a good source of books for ebay or amazon or greenmetropolis etc.

Public Libraries are free to join & books are free to borrow - as are audio books if you're visually impaired. Normally there's a charge for rental of these, and for cds and dvds & videos but you get them cheaper and for a longer time than you do at blockbuster.

Not all authorities ask for ID - mine doesn't. Internet access is also free if you're a member, you get an hour a day at our place, and there's a 'walk-in web' so you can grab more time if you need it (and you don't mind standing / queuing)

Make sure you return stuff on time tho cos fines are nasty. If you can't make it down there you should be able to renew over the phone or even online.

There are probably things like reading groups - and ask about children's activites, there are usually things on in the school hols that are generally free and homework clubs during term-time.

They're great for tracking down info, addresses etc, can tell you where your nearest anything is, will lend you their stapler/sellotape/comfy chair and they generally enjoy doing it.
Also, there really (really) aren't lots of stern ladies in tweed & half-moon glasses with buns in their hair telling you to 'shush' any more, it's much more relaxed & the staff are cooler :D

I'm prob'ly repeating stuff that's already been posted but hope this is useful for someone!

  • If you love reading and books, the library is the MSE way to go - just as satisfying as having a good browse in Waterstones (or on Amazon) but no temptation to spend anything - just remember to renew your books in time so you don't have to pay the fines (a quick telephone call or you can do it online) Highly recommended :D:D:D

You can browse and choose and take something home to enjoy - for nothing!!

When my finances are stretched to breaking point - a visit to the library always cheers me up! Fiction, non-fiction and even for a very reasonable fee CDs and DVDs - and the daily newspapers, latest magazines - ("Which" magazine is one they have at our library -very helpful and cheaper than subscribing) Closest you can get to entertainment and loads of information for FREE.:j
