  • My local library is free (for books anyway, DVD's and video's have a small charge) unless, like me, you forget to return the book so get fined!

  • Our library is free, joined about 2 weeks ago. They wanted to see a utility bill with address.

Allowed to take upto 20 items at any time!!!.

Also allowed to renew books online which is really handy.
  • Type in www.yourcouncil'sname.gov.uk and see if they mention library services. You may even be able to join online.

    Hi
I have decided that instead of buying books and reading them once I will join the local library(dont know why I havent bothered before!).
I have tried ringing them tonight but there is no reply---does anyone know if you are charged a fee to join? also what ID will I need to take with me to join?
    Thanks

I thought all public libraries were free to join - certainly the five different areas I've lived in have had free membership.

For the the council area I live in I needed two forms of ID with my name and address on; a utility bill and my rent agreement were acceptable, even though the utility bill had my name misspelled.

The council area I work in were happy to let me join too (something I wanted as they had a better selection of books and I could get there during the day) so long as I could prove that I worked in the area. They wanted proof that I was employed in the City, and again two forms of ID with my name and address on, presumably so they knew where to send the overdue fines reminders to!

In Hull you don't even need any ID to join, just walk in and they'll give you your tickets after you fill in very simple, quick forms.
