Joining the library--is it free?

Hi
I have decided that instead of buying books and reading them once I will join the local library(dont know why I havent bothered before!).
I have tried ringing them tonight but there is no reply---does anyone know if you are charged a fee to join? also what ID will I need to take with me to join?
Thanks

Our Library is free - I needed to show ID, but they accepted my council tax bill (Iwas just on way to pay it).

  • Hi gilly

Joining your local library should be free. You will need to produce a recent document (such as a council tax bill or bank statement) showing your home address. This is just to prove that you live in the borough or county of the library that you are joining.

I am a regular at my local library - I usually get about two or three books a week and the occasional dvd. I haven't counted up how much money I have saved by borrowing the books and dvds instead of buying them but I know it will be a small fortune.

Borrowing books should be free but you will have to pay a small charge for the dvds or cds. You will also have to pay a small fee (60p in Preston) to reserve a book. Hope this helps.

    Happy borrowing!

public libraries are free to join, borrowing books is free , there is usually a charge for DVDs or CDs.

long time since i joined but as i remember i had to produce proof of address (utility bill etc )
  • Library is free ...sometimes when you join you can get a voucher for a free DVD or CD rental..why not ask?? All my family joined and we got 5 free DVDs!! Libraries are not just about books these days! The library is much easier here than it used to be..you can renew your books online as many times at you like ...search for a book you want and place an order for it ..its great..no more piles of books with nowhere to put them!!!
I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes ;)

Mine was free to join, you pay a small charge for DVDs, videos and CDs though. Have you tried looking up your library service online? They often have all the information about how to join and what they charge for on the county council website (my library you can even check what you have taken out and then renew your books online which is great!).

Mine was free to join and is free to borrow books and reserve them. Its £1 I think for DVDs and CDs and obviously there are fees if you're late returning anything! All I needed was some proof of address... they weren't too suspicious though!! :)
