HELP Cant get back on the net after turning off at the mains

Daughter has tried turning off at the mains to see if the ntl upgrade can go through they have uopgraded free from 1mb to 2mb but it wasnt showing up

She has done some maintenance on the laptop before doing this

win update, ccleaner, spybot, adaware, zone alarm all was working ok the last thing she updated was some software fir win xp from win update.

She has an ntl dls cable modem and a linksys WRT54GS wireless broadband router. she just turned the whole lot off at the mains left it 2 mins then switched it back on

she can get on her laptop and everything looks normal the lights are on both router and modem but there is no net foir her she is hardwire connected with laptop and there are 2 others that are wirelessly using it that also camn no longer get on the net
Thanx

  • turn it all off
turn on the modem and give it at least 5 minutes to settle and detect the line

    Now turn on the router
again give it a few minutes to settle

Can she get to the configuration pages of the modem and router?

if so can she check and see what the modem says about the condition of the line, IE if it is up or not and if the line speed has changed or not

If she can get to the modem pages and it says it is up she should be able to get though without too many problems

Should she start them up separetely then the modem first then the router? I think everything is on one long plug socket, shes at university in a student house so I'm not with her

  • it is possible that the router needs to see the modem nice and settled with the line up properly BEFORE it will let users "through"
I know I had this problem with my wireless kit and now ALWAYS reset modem first wait a few minutes turn back on the wireless part and then try accessing it again

it could be that her ip leases may need renewing but that is a bit further down the road than this
  • Sorry about not seeing your post about the long mains extension

Yes unplug the back of the modem and the router and plug them back in the correct order with the wait, that should do it

in order to start just the modem up first can she unplug the router from the long 5 plug socket first then wait till 5 mins then put the router in.
    Thanx

  • yes that may clear it, if not do both
  • It is easier to start and start with the computer that is hard wired to the net and get that working first, sort out any wireless ones afterwards,
