BEWARE 08000 Mum and dad

We have just discovered that my daughter (aged 13) has accepted calls from a friend usingthis premium rate service. 2 charges are billed - 80111 costs £1.50 then 80112 charges £3.00 x 2. So each call costs £7.50. Bill up by £67.50.

I complained on the basis that to accept a reverse charge call their terms and conditions state you have to be 16 and over.

The provider has wiggled out of it by stating that PAYG simcard providers do not place an age limit and contract users have to be 18 .

The web site is very appealing to teenagers. One states they want their background music on their phone!
It should only be used in cases of emergency - what's 999 for then?

Beware - you should barr your childrens mobile numbers so they can't be scammed!

Maybe [STRIKE]some[/STRIKE] most if not all the blame should lie closer to home?

I suggest you make your child pay for this via chores/pocket money etc to educate them that they cannot continue to do this.

There are many of these site all legal and none that you can police so this is the best option for you.

Oh and i assume they are on a contract? This puts more blame on you im afraid, give them your credit card and pin why not? at least that has a credit limit!
    Back by no demand whatsoever.

This should be a warning to control your kids and bring them up with some kind of morals.

why try to shift the blame when clearly its your daughter who is in the wrong.

if she stole from a shop would you try to blame the shop owner for having products on display?
  • This kind of service seems to market itself as an alternative to giving kids a mobile in the first place. To be honest though, if you were on a contract, what would be the point in placing an 08000MUMDAD call anyway? You'd still get charged on your mobile bill for the 0800 call. You might as well just call the person you were trying to reach in the first place...

Because the service is not aimed at contract customers it is aimed at kids who are most likely on PAYG and this allows them to contact people in an emergency if they have ran out of credit.
