Got to agree with the above post. We are very careful on turning lights off while in holiday rentals but I would never book a property that was on a coin meter or changed extra for a meter reading, as it would be too tempting for the owner to make a nice little earner out of the meter.

We're just back from a week in a Hoseasons self catering bungalow. We had to provide a £50 deposit and the cost of electricity was deducted and the rest refunded.

We got a refund of £19 so we 'apparently' used £31 of electricity in a week. Considering we were driving back to our own home every day to do work on it, and so were out a lot, £31 seems like a nice little earner, even with no coin meter.

we only ever stay at upmarket holiday homes and would expect electricity to be fully included as we also expect a welcome hamper and dishwasher tabs etc. It depends on what type of guest you attract op. The prices we pay are high but I would run a mile at a coin meter or if the power was turned off when out. I also expect a washing machine and usually a tumbler dryer etc. If you aren`t making enough profit then up your prices

Just as a point of info, the Hoseasons bungalow I mentioned above....cost £1045 for one week.

I would have classed that as upmarket and was surprised electricity was not included.

I'm inclined (as a potential guest) to say "get over it".

I understand how annoying it'd be as an owner though.

Is it a UK property or abroad? We have an apartment in Spain that we installed a Ecosensor on last year to prevent the air conditioning being left on all day. As a 1 bed apart, it doesn't take long for the electric to eat up any profit. The sensor detects movement in the property and can be set to turn off the a/c unit after a set amount of time. It does have a night setting, so it doesn't switch off through the night time. Some people local to us have also bought card meters. They have worked out an average cost of electric through the stay and provide enough for the "average" user. Top up cards can be purchased from the keyholders.
