Ideas to save on Vodafone

Hello,

I have recently been made redundant and have decided to go travelling for 9 months, Unfortunately I still have 12 months remaining on my Vodafone £20 a month contract. Obviously for these 9 months I do not really intending to use my UK sim due to the extortionate rates and don’t really want to send £180 down the drain. I have spoken to Vodafone and they have been very unhelpful in trying to cut down my cost. So I was hoping someone might have an idea for me to save some money.

Thanks
(ps I cannot downgrade my current contract)

Sell the phone and use the proceeds to pay off the contract.

It is a contract for a minimum term, not for when it suits the customer I'm afraid.

Do you not have any friends/family who will take over the contract?

    Welcome to the forum, Andy.

Now I am not having a go here, please believe me, but yours is a stark warning to MSE members who are salivating over the latest offering from HTC, Apple, Blackberry etc tied to a 24 month contract.

It seems a good deal when you have a job and the money is rolling in. But circumstances change and the shiny gadget turns into a millstone overnight. Now you seem to be solvent enough, but your redundancy has meant a change to your plans. Others may not have the same financial cushion you probably have.

Times are going to get tougher over the next couple of years and my advice to anyone who would be in lumber if they lost their job is, for the next year or two, go monthly sim-only and keep your contractual commitments down.

It may not help you, Andy, but it's a good warning to others.

    Have a good trip.

    Hi Andy,

Ooh, how exciting that you are going travelling, I hope you have a great time. :j

I’m afraid that we couldn’t cancel your contract without penalty at the moment; however there is the option of transferring your contract into another person’s name, if you know of someone who would be willing to take over your contract. If you would like to discuss this further with us, then please feel free to contact our team via –
