Best iPhone 4 Sat-Nav Application?

I am a long time user of TomTom Go (the original!) and now upgrading to iPhone 4 (from 3G).

Can anyone tell me the best sat nav / GPS app for the iPhone 4 that is reliable in the UK?

Thinking of getting rid of the handheld TomTom and using the iPhone 4 for Sat-Nav.

Is the TomTom app as reliable? before I shell out the £50 for it?

I also have the 'N-Drive' app which I have used occasionally, but would like a good sat-nav for iphone 4, ideally, Google Navigation! (but not sure if thats coming to iPhone?)

Thanks

Any recommendations? as I can't try before I buy
  • Try the free one - Skobbler - to see how you get on with using your iPhone as a sat nav. It uses open maps so it is constantly being updated rather than the annual "we're going to charge you an extra £70" from TomTom. Like Google Maps, it does use your data but I'm not sure how much (I'm getting my iP4 in the next couple of months) and it's had some good reviews - especially since their last update.

If you want a cheaper alternative to TomTom, Co-Pilot is very good. Quite a few people have defected from TT to Co-P and prefer it.

Thanks, yes i do actually have 'Skobbler Lite' which I haven't got round to trying yet..

And not sure what the difference is between this and the Full version.

Didnt know it used your data, which maybe an issue now on long journeys with the iPhone 4 data cap?
  • The difference is that the lite version doesn't have the speed camera updates.

I think Skobbler is fine for someone who wants a "now and then" sat nav or is looking to just test how well the GPS works on their phone, but is not a long-term solution at present. If I were you, I'd try Skobbler along side your TomTom (with the TT set to silent) to see how they work. If you can have someone sat beside you keeping an eye on the speed and directions, it should give you a good indication of whether you think you can cope with the sat nav on your phone.

  • Sorry for digging up and old thread but I have a question regarding Skobbler lite on my new iphone4.

Does using the GPS use data?

From what I can gather using the GPS does not but using the maps does. If I have pre-downloaded the maps on Skobbler then I can use it without using data?

Am I right or have i missed somthing?

Thought I would check before I get a massive data bill!

I've gone with Skobbler full which was ok, seemed to take me a long route,

But then bought the TomTom app which is fantastic so far!

Even gets sat lock under the dashboard so its hidden from view
