Any tri-band mobile will work in the US.
As long as you have roaming enabled of course.
    Yes, ASDA runs on Vodafone.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

bring an unlocked phone with you and buy an AT&T sim at any AT&T store. $15, $25 or whatever you think you might need.. then use your phone there as a pay and go. easy. and cheaper than using your uk one.

Reception in the States isn't that great so make sure you look at reception per network before you go. Also be awasre that in the States the networks charge you for incoming calls.

As always if calling home Skype is the best option even more so for those calling you.

No 1210 on the Nokia UK website and the others near it 1208 / 1209 are dual band only. So it is unlikely to work.

you can pick up a phone for very little money, here is the web page for you to look at.

    http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/cell-phones/prepaid-phones.jsp?wtSlotClick=1-003PVE-0-1&WT.svl=calltoaction

just check the coverage at the top of the page. There are different prepay plans, and yes you pay for incoming calls and texts, but still cheaper than using a uk sim. there is another company called Tracphone and I had one of their phones but I thought it was only good if you were calling within the usa, coz you could not call mobile numbers in the UK, and this was a pain, also to call uk landlines it was not direct dial and you had to use an access number before the number you wanted to call. hope this helps.
