You can clear out a number of temporary repositories in vista such as c:\windows\softwaredistribution\download.
There are also vista service pack cleanup programs on your computer you can run. (e.g. SP2 cleanup programs is called Compcln.exe)

As for external hard drives, there are loads around, and you'll see 1TB drives for c.£50 from time to time. I'll let others comment on their reliability! I personally am happy with my 1TB Seagate drive I got for £55. And split infinitives

you can buy a very good 1TB drive for under £50 however you will almost certainly find its a 3.5" desktop mains powered external one rather than the smaller pocket sized 2.5" drives that need no external power that might be more appropriate for use with a laptop0 -
