Cheap Alternatives To Bankers Draft/Postal Order For People On JSA?

Hi,

I was wondering (apart from a bank account ofc) if theres a cheap or even free alternative in useing the same system as a bankers draft or Postal order... Currently, the prices for both are rip-offs.

Please don't ask why, I have my reasons and I only want to keep this as short as possible. Basicly, useing a bank account (any) is out of the question.

Postal orders tend to be cheaper than banker's drafts for smaller amounts. How much are you trying to send?
    Best Regards

Hi, I wanted my JSA paid to me via anything but my bank account (I'm closing it down) and was wondering what the cheapest solution was to sending/reciving money. I mean, post office wants a whopping 10% of anything you try to cash... £50 = £5... That's a lot to just have money put in through one post office and come out the next.

But basic bank accounts don't come with cheque books. I have read a post where somebody said a BS would issue a free cheque at branch for basic bank account holder, but I can't remember which BS.

Halifax will write bankers' drafts from savings accounts for free ... is this what you are after?

Nationwide had a free "Counter draft", but it became a fee-paying service recently. Coventry BS is also similar, their accounts don't have a separate sort/account number for everyone, so they can't let you have a cheque book, but they will post you a cheque with an amount that you prefer (only by post, not in branch, as far as I recall though).

OP wants to avoind all banks though, which may include building society as well (and they are more strict anyway).
    Enjoy the silence...

Norwich and Peterborough's basic account comes with a cheque book. You apply for a current account and in the process tick a box asking then to open a basic account if you fail for the standard one.

No, as mentioned, I'm closing down my bank account and I was wondering if there are alternatives in reciving my JSA. I completly hate banks as of today and am sick of them taking my money when they feel just becuase a company says its direct debit and for the past 2 months any money that comes in useally gets debited and I have to run around for ages trying to get it back and sick of it.

I was asking to find out of the Job Centre will pay my JSA any other way...

Thanks for all the replies btw.

Open a Post Office card account :-

...... it's normally used by people who want their pension / benefits in cash. Fairly certain JSA is one that can be paid in.

But it's useless for paying bills. Which you either need to do with cash - or pay via National Giro (as opposed to Bank Giro) over the PO counter :-
