I wouldn't bother paying anyone else, if you were considering going on a course then save the money, buy the materials and learn on the job, couple of books out of the library/check out websites. Ceilings are harder than walls but bathrooms generally are small rooms so ideal for practice!
Don't bother getting into debt for this, you'll manage to do it yourself no doubt. I'd buy the materials as I could afford them if you are on a strict budget (depends on the size of your room but if money is more important than time then get on the phone and negotiate with builders merchants, get them to arrange delivery to your door when they have a lorry going your way).
1) Find out why the plaster is falling - you'll need to dig a bit deeper to see if there is any leaking pipes etc.
2) Use Fermacell board if you can get it, it's more expensive per board but you can get away without taping or skimming (the harder things to get right) so will be easier for you.
3) If you use normal plaster board make sure it is moisture resistant and use small sheets, much easier to handle by yourself.
4) You'll probably be OK just screwing the boards over what is there already which will solve the immediate problem of plaster falling down very quickly!0 -
mc33033 - Really appreciate the advice.... the initial problem appears to be a skim job I had done a few years ago... there appears to be what I can only describe as "air pockets" basically the skim is falling away from certain areas it looks like it hasn't adhered to properly...
leaving behind the remainder skim which HAS stuck and exposing the areas of plaster which I paid to have covered over....
I'm going to look into getting plastering manuals/books from the library.... any advice greatly appreciated as tbh I'm scared witless of cocking it up!
Thanks in advance....0 -
bump in the hope of more advice0
