Absolutely ridiculous it really is. We offer subjects that don't have any use for a job, yet where there are jobs we don't have the uni courses in sufficient numbers.
That's not strictly true. A lot of courses (engineering, earth sciences, teachers for maths and physics, etc) are all massively undersubscribed. We just cannot get students into these courses. In Scotland they have been pushing teaching (in all subjects), yet can't actually give these graduates jobs. I have a couple of social work graduate friends who have really struggled with getting jobs too. Yes, the graduate job-market is totally saturated, but it's not quite so easy for those with the more vocational degrees either.
Universities should not be graduate factories, pumping out job-ready people. They are academic institutions and really should remain that way. Higher education in this country is being slowly ruined.
Good luck to those going through Clearing. Don't just choose a course and/or a university because you want to go to university this year.0 -

Ha ha. The surf science comment really was joke.
And yes you are right i could now also apply to be a maths/science teacher (not an option earlier today), but firstly i'm not qualified, and i really have no desire to teach.
There are currently in my county a massive number of jobs for SW's though....
Nice to note that there are no teaching jobs available for 'little' school, and at a different university i could get bursaries for doing a PGCE in early years tough.
Roll on the social work clearing positions.... (Pie in the sky i know)...

I'm off to do Quantity Surveying, another unsubscribed course for construction and civil engineering.. I've had no problems getting a place, even though I only went to college 1 day a week last year! I don't understand how so many people overlook these courses.. ? I'm in line to have a good career with decent enough pay one day.
Got my results today and needed a merit, luckily I managed a distinction9/70lbs to lose0 -

Congratulations on your grades and getting on the course you wantedI think part of the problem with courses like Quanitity Surveying is that they're not jobs which people hear alot about so unless students actively search these out or attend careers fayres etc... students are unlikely to think about it as an option.

I think it's a mix of not really knowing about it, and not wanting to do it. When people are 17 and 18, they rarely know what they want to do for the rest of their lives.
I was considering town planning as a career (also undersubscribed), but whilst it is a fairly steady job with a decent salary, it just wasn't for me.0 -
Well I'm 27 now, and it's only through the college tutor that I heard of Quantity Surveying. I'd never even heard of Civil Engineering before a few years ago, and even then didn't really grasp what it was until I did my course.
My dad is a builder and so I went college to do the construction course to be a building surveyor. How one year opened my eyes and showed me a different route than just A-Levels.
It's a shame young people aren't shown the different options earlier on. I remember that when I was at school I had no idea, and consequently didn't do any A-Levels.9/70lbs to lose0 -
There will be a lot less places in clearing this year than previous years, as universities have been told to crack down on the number of students they take on...if they take over a set amount, they (the university) will be fined.
I know Aberdeen (where I've just graduated from) has had a lot of problems over the last few years, taking on more and more students then wondering why there was an accommodation crisis, not enough lecturers, etc. Anyhow, as a result they're not in clearing this year, and I suspect other uni's will be offering limited places.0 -
