it's far far worse putting diesel in a petrol

You can't. The hoses are designed to make this impossible.

You can if heavy handed the restrictors are normally only plastic and can get pushed out if using diesel pump in petrol car

I would drain the tank and fill to the brim with diesel. If you can't get under it to completely drain the tank try syphoning as much out as you can. If you can get 10 litres out and it is a 70 litre tank I'd have no issue with topping up the tank (do this with fuel cans, dont drive to the petrol station). 55-60 litres of diesel wont be harmed by 7 litres of diesel. You dont need to change the filters, you would if you'd somehow got diesel in a petrol car. A lot of people running on veg oil use a 10% mix of petrol to thin their oil.

PS If you can get hold of a fish tank syphon from a pet shop and attach to a garden hose this might help you get the fuel out.

This isn't true i don't think, it's far far worse putting diesel in a petrol, the pump on a diesel will not work with petrol so will not allow the fuel through the system unless it has a diesel mix and will cough a bit and smoke a little. As above when it happened to me all it cost me was the fuel i put in the tank.

Don't worry mate, drain it and put diesel in,it will be fine

Talk about sitting on the fence.

    Wrong, but wrong.

Diesel in a petrol results in a non runner, but all can be saved. Petrol in a diesel (in the wrong proportions) equalls a screwed engine, fact
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

One of the neighbours filled their Skoda 1.9PD diesel with petrol, and drove it till it conked out. The Skoda garage didn't seem a bit concerned when I picked her up and the bill for draining, replacing the filters and including a full tank of diesel (worth £55+) whenshe picked it up the next day was £145

On the other hand its well documented on the web that Land Rover insist on replacing the whole fuel system if a diesel has been stated with petrol in the tank

    Yeah.

Hardly worth the OP posting the question was it?

What on Earth are we all worrying about?
  • Hi everyone

I am so sorry I have not replied as I have been busy with the mechanic trying to sort my stupid mistake out and thank you soo much for all your replies.

Anyway, I went to the mechanic and he said he will drain the tank replace the filters clean EVERYTHING out and then it should be ok. He kept the van for two days because he said it took ages draining the tank out and also he took the whole tank out and gave it a good clean and replaced the filters. Anyway, the bill was £140. I think compared to the AA it was a good price - still a waste of money for my stupid mistake though. :(

And again I want to say sorry for my late reply and thanks again for all your help.

I have thanked everyone who replied.:)

the local shop keeper but 20 worth of petrol in her diesel bmw and bmw charged her £2k for an entire fuel system overhaul..

neighbour put 20 of derv into his petrol escort ( he has a diesel audi too) and it cut out but we emptied the tank and refilled with petrol and new filter and it was fine after that.

so OP get the tank drained and new fuel filter fill with diesel and away you go..
