Hiya every1

This is my first time posting, so bear with me, ok, may be a long one,
Bought a 1997 corsa car, 95thous miles on her, paid 500 cash to the dealers, as i was leaving the garage on day i got it, 9th july, i noticed a orange lite on, asked wat this was, guy told me its fine, jus a sensor lite, it was on the day theu got it, ok so i took jis word as good, 3 wks later, car starts cutting out on me, found out that the lite was the engine management lite, so got car 2 garage, found out that the EGV valve needed replaced, also beerings going on it,

Fones the garage where i bought it, they told me, no cover with car that value, and "sold as seen", again took his word, got car back on monday from mechinic, and it died again mon nite had 2 get towed, was stranded with 3 kids at 10pm nite, lashing, got it bk 2 mechinic, then 2 be told, the Crankshaft sensor gone, im ringing the garage leaving messages, but not getting calls returned,

EGV Valve £100 +labour£65
Sensor £40+labour £20, total £225 so far, not including beerings

not sure where i stand legally r what my right are,

    "Jis?"

Spelling aside, what on Earth did you think you were doing taking it from the garage with warning lights flashing on the dashboard!? Just letting him fob you off saying "it's fine..."!?

For future reference, warning lights mean something is wrong.

Unfortunately for you the garage you bought the car from is clearly dodgy as fu*k and you're going to get nowhere with them.

You have no rights what so ever. I bought an astra this year but i felt the garage was abit to dodge and i just couldn't take but i did lose £150.

    Lesson learned then I suppose.

    Fu*king dodgy car dealers!
  • Indeed, I wouldn't trust a Vauxhall as far as I could throw it and I drive one!

Yeah going to agree, I think they seen you coming.

There are some good tutorials on how to replace things like the EGV valve and it's quite straight forward. Good skill to learn too ;)

Scrap yards are a good place for parts for a car that age!
:exclamatiTo the internet.. I need to complain about something!

EGR valve isnt even that essential, you may struggle in your MOT emissions test.

When you say bearings, if you mean big end, then scrap the thing, will cost you more than the car again to fix.
    Back by no demand whatsoever.

It past its MOT test 2nd time round, not sure if emissions were done??

Bearing have no idea, mechanic said the bearings were going, he said bout £25?

I think iv jus been taken the P*ss outa,
  • We had nightmares with EGR valve failure on our 'N' reg vectra - 8 failed whilst under warranty (car was 6 months old when purchased) car kept cutting out on us, wouldn't restart and was using vast amounts of oil......turned out the car was factory fitted with the wrong sized pistons!!!!!!!!!! Oil was coming up and contaminating the EGR valve (hence the failure of them) Vauxhall dealer just kept replacing them and wouldn't investigate why they were failing - just told me I was a neurotic female - nice! Paid for independent engineer to take a look and Vauxhall eventually paid for a replacement short block following his report and a fax sent directly to the chairman of Vauxhall. Only took me three years to get a result - would I buy another Vauxhall...........are you having a laugh???
  • Hi,

Apologies if I have missed something in someone else's reply. I don't think you have lost out at all. First "sold as seen" is not permited under the CPR's (Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations) this practice needs to be reported to trading standards (via Consumer Direct). Second - traders (garages included) CANNOT exempt themselves from giving you your rights under the Sale of Goods Act (again if they do or try to it is a potential offence under CPR's).

Write to the trader outling your issues and requesting that under the SoG Act they rectify the matter (template letters on Consumer Direct website). If they refuse then small claim court is only recourse. Consumer Direct website/callcentre can advise further. (Google consumer direct)

    Good luck.
