Ikea Malm bed - Slats keep falling through!

I got myself a lovely Super King Size Ikea Malm bed.

The problem is that the damn slats keep falling through!!

Has anyone else had this problem and more importantly does anyone know how to sort it???

The slightest bit of movement and the slats lose position!

Cheers

Have you got a length of fabric tape stapled each side of the slats to keep the spacing correct? If you have, are the slats wide enough to fit into the centre beam and side frame with a bit of movement?

If the above, then that is how mine fits. They are very loose but once the mattress is in place the weight keeps them in position. That's unless your idea of "the slightest bit of movement" is different to mine....;)

I have the same bed and agree with Volcano. I was worried about the slats too but so far they have been ok (touch wood).

Must admit I was a bit disappointed with the way it was designed. expected better from Ikea but so far the only time they've fallen through was when I was messing with the mattress.

You could try a small dollop of no more nails between the slats and the metal shelf.

    mine are fine.....
My slats are joined at the ends with a rubber strip and this fits tightly between the metal in the middle...
you could try zip tie wrapped around the rubber and metal to secrue it.

:T I was about to recommend the very same solution. It definitely works. No need to do all of them though, just a couple about half way along each side.

    Appreciate all the replies.

I'll try some of this no nails stuff and see how we go.

    cheers again!

  • My brother had this problem. Was it with the sprung slats?

    I think they are sprung.

And another thing whilst we are discussing the bed, I have to say its a great bed and we sleep well on it but ever since we've had it, both me and the mrs have a terrible bad back every day without fail.

Im wondering if this has anything to do with the slats. Anyone else experienced this? Why do the slats have gaps in them? Does it make the bed function any differently to a bed that had slats with no gaps and will that be a solution to our back aches?

  • back ache could be you just adjusting to a correct sleeping position, especially if your old bed/mattress was past it.

i dont have an Ikea bed but i do have one with slats and was worried about them falling through. i screwed every slat to the frame at each end and no problems. (may not be ideal if bed is still under guarantee)

I'm not sure that you can get a bed with no gaps - even expensive beds, where the slats fit into grooves in the frame, must have gaps, because otherwise there wouldn't be individual grooves; you've got to have a small bit of wood between one groove and the next. The thing that usually makes the difference is if they're sprung or not. Slats that aren't sprung are completely flat, whereas sprung ones are either slightly bowed, or else they've got a bit of sprung rubber on either end. I'm surprised the slats are falling through - usually the Ikea beds have little metal bits that the fabric tie fits round and holds the whole slat base securely.

I agree with fatblokexl; if you haven't had the bed long, and you had your old bed for a long time, it may just be that your bodies are adjusting to a new (and probably better) sleeping position, and your muscles are having to be retrained. A bed topper might help to ease you into it a bit.

I just had a an idea!!!
My slats are slightly bent, which way up are you putting yours
I have mine so bend faces upwards then when you put weight on them they are a very tight fit.
