my oil boiler is knackered - should I switch to gas ?

Hi Folks

My oil boiler blew up a month ago and I am contemplating switiching to gas. It looks a lot more expensive though compared to oil.

I spent £500 on oil last year for central heating and water.

I think gas might be better from a house selling point of view though.

It will cost apprx £5.5K to convert to gas. It would cost approx £4k to get a new oil boiler.

3 bed house detached. 2 adults, 3 kids.

The gas companies seem to have people by the short and curlies whereas with oil I find you can ring around a few companies and get a better deal.

Are there any grants available these days for boilers ?

Thanks
Dunramblin.

Are you talking about mains gas or LPG?

Who has told you, and why is it going to cost that much to change to a gas boiler?

After all it should only be a basic boiler change.

I changed from oil to mains gas late 2004, only cost me price of a gas boiler, plus a few odds and ends, including copper pipe, came to a total of £750-ish. I fitted, mate commissioned................

If change over is to LPG, personally I'd stick with oil......
  • Hi - I'm talking about mains which is about 20 metres from my front door.
British Gas - approx £4500 for a new boiler in a new place as the old location is not suitable. Same cylinder + £700 to connect up to the mains.

2 other ltd gas installer quotes came in around the same price (approx £5K, not including connection to main), except these included new cylinders as well.

I've got a quote from an oil boiler installer coming soon.
I think sticking with oil seems like the right way to go.

    Thanks for your comments
