I would rather they limited child benefit to two children only, thus discouraging people from having more than two if they can't afford it.

Thats exactly what i was going to say - child benefit for the first 2 or 3 children only.

Yes it would make a huge difference, but if it went then we would simply have to manage.

We could manage without if push came to shove - but just feel that this would be another kick to middle-income families like us. We will already be losing the WFTC.
  • Yes I have 2 children so CB for me is about 132.00 per month?

I think I could manage without if need be

Is this because you are not eligable due to not having a child for which you are responsible for?

Confused! :D do you mean you are not the PWC (the child doesn't live with you - i.e. PWC or somebody else claims CB for your child) or that CB isn't claimed for your child at all?

I absolutely could not do without my child benefit. Being classed probably as middle income I look on paper as though I am probably rolling in it. But my husband left 2 years ago, I have two children under 5 and have been left to pay the mortgage and all the bills. I work full time in order to keep a roof over our heads, can't afford to sell the house we are in or downsize and my child care costs are extortionate taking about 50% of what I earn. I will lose my WFTC next year and quite honestly don't know how I am going to manage short of giving up work and letting the state pay my mortgage and bills and not having to worry about child care so the thought of yet another load of money being taken off me is terrifying! It won't hit the very poor, those on benefits, as their benefits are already means tested and go up or down dependant on what else they have. It won't hit the richer families who can afford not to have it but hardworking, responsible people like me will just get poorer and poorer! Prostitution is seeming like a good option for me come next April!

No need to be rude - and I think you mean grasp? - I was surprised because I thought the take up for child benefit was 100% - assumably you don't claim it for your child because your not entitled to it - i.e. whoever your child lives with claims it for your child.

If your not entitled to CB it isn't going to make any difference to you so why bother to comment if it's not relevant to you
