Hi

Wondered if anyone can help me, ive not long had a blackberry 9700 bold on orange, it took it with to me to majorca in july, i didnt use it whilst there to make any calls and only used the internet a few times but that was through the hotels WIFI.

I have just rang orange and they have told me i should of turned off "Data Services" because whilst there, and turned on for two weeks, my phone has been roaming?checking for new BBM's,emails and internet updates :(:( i didnt know that i had to do this, wish i now had left the phone at home or kept it turned off for two weeks.

Orange customer services are not interested and have alreadt took the money on direct debit.

Is there anyway to get the amount reduced and claim the money back ????

Lesson learned.

Thanks Mark

Sh!! - Just realised the fiance took her new blackberry with us aswell, i bet she will have a massive bill aswell :(

sorry think this really is a case of lesson learned, unless you can prove you didnt get the message telling you how much data roaming cost and that you should turn it off

I would challenge this with Orange. New EU rules came into force at the beginning of July specifically to stop people being caught out this way.
Your data useage should have been capped at about £40:
From 1 July 2010 consumers no longer need to worry about accidentally running up huge bills when they connect to the internet using mobile networks via a phone or computer when abroad in the EU. Thanks to the EU's roaming rules, from 1st July travellers' data-roaming limit will be automatically set at €50 excluding VAT (unless they have chosen another limit - higher or lower). Operators will have to send users a warning when they reach 80% of their data-roaming bill limit. The operator will have to cut off the mobile internet connection once the limit has been reached, unless the customer has indicated they want to continue data roaming that particular month.

(That's from the EU website, sorry I can't post the link)

I was in Spain in July and Vodafone were definately applying a cap.

    According to Oranges site

    http://help.orange.co.uk/orangeuk/support/selfservice/forwardrendererurl.jsp?DocId=496015&fromnew=true

The limit should have been in place
    European Union (EU) data limit
From 1 July 2010 weve added a data limit of 12MB (pay as you go) or 16MB (pay monthly) to your account so that youll never pay more than 50 (approximately £44 ex VAT) for sending data in the EU.

When you use data in the EU you will receive:
    • A text alert when you've used 50% of your 12MB / 16MB data allowance; this text will tell you what to do if you would like to remove the data limit.
    • A text alert when you've reached 98% of your 12MB / 16MB data allowance; this text will also tell you what to do if you would like to remove the data limit.
If you do not wish to limit the data you use whilst in the EU just text YES to 386 to remove it.

Alternatively, if you are a pay monthly customer you can call Orange customer services on 150 from your Orange mobile or 07973 100 150 from any other phone.

If you are a pay as you go customer you can call 450 from your Orange phone or 07973 100 450 from any other phone.

You can find more information on the EU Data limit here.

According to the site the limit is reset on the 1st of each month - but unless you used 16MB 1/2/3 then I don't think you can even get part of the bill capped i'm afraid.
