But is the amount 'knocked off' more than the saving made by not using a fensa installer

    Hi There,

I wonder if anyone can please help me...
I recently purchased a property which had only single glazing throughout.
Through my F*!^wit of a BIL (whole other story) I had double glazing installed.
When pressed on the subject of getting a FENSA certificate, BIL 'fessed up and said person who did the installing was not FENSA registered and thus no certificate.

    What do i do?
Also concerned that my windows may not be proper double glazing. How can i know for sure? I don't remember seeing any markings on the windows.

an alternative to FENSA (which is a vastly overrated scheme in my view) you can get your local building control to inspect. about £70 round here for any number of windows (if you are having more done get them all inspected at once). They will check right type of glass etc; has been installed and unlike fensa may give you an opinion on the draughtproofing etc; they will also issue you your certificate (hopefully) that you can show to the surveyor when you come to sell. they like to knock money off if these aren;t present and yes it will be more than £70!

there are many dodgy installations (by FENSA members and not) and I don't subscribe to "a window is a window". if you've paid your money you are entitled to something insulating and draught free.
also it needs to be safe - my friend nearly bled to death after falling through a patio door without safety glass. admittedly this was abroad. any glass less than 800mm from the floor or 1500mm from the floor if in a door or adjacent panel needs to be either laminated, toughened or very thick glass.

You could never buy a patio door in the UK thats not made of safety glass.
"a window is a window". if you've paid your money you are entitled to something insulating and draught free

If you cant stand at a window and work out that its draught free !!!
  • safety glass is missed out in required locations sometimes, in this country.

i think you mean that it will be obvious to anyone whether it is installed with the current standard units and draught free?
if that is the case then there would be no disputes between homeowners and window companies about bad installations. but there are. so an independent (expert) view would be useful, and FENSA not much use for this. but i'm sure you know better than all the silly building inspectors.
  • When I bought my house my solicitor discoverd that the bathroom window had not been installed by a Fensa registered company/fitter. Then it was up to me whether to walk away from the house that was perfect for me in every other respect, to to go ahead with the purchase. I went ahead, and the solicitor had covered himself. Job done.

If you're happy with your windows, I would be more concerned with getting some kind of guarantee, than worrying about the lack of certificate.

Of course safety glass has been 'forgotten' in bodge jobs.
But my comment was of patio doors.
