Old Money was taken off a member of my family by cashier

Options
I had recently found a 1993 Charles Dickens £10 note from an old jacket from our attic and after i saw it i put it into my wallet so that i could maybe exchange it at the post office later. The next day because i had owed my sister £35 i gave her my wallet to take out what i owed her and later that day i got an angry phone call of her saying how she was refused to use it at a Tesco because the cashier believed that it was fake and she had put to lines on the watermark and she confiscated it.
Is there any way that i could get it back or is it not in my rights?
Also she had used a scanner that said that the note was fake but does this mean it was fake or was it that it was 17yrs old that the scanner wasn't programmed to recognise an note this old so instead said it was fake? I might go back later to see what i can do so any advice would be appreciated.

A note will not just show as a fake because it is 17 years old so if it showed as a fake it probably was.

Unfortunately if it was a fake your sister would not have been given it back, she could have asked for a receipt though to show it had been taken. Although there isn't actually much you can do with a receipt.

Actually I think this is why a receipt should be issued:

Forgeries however will be retained and destroyed by the Bank (including Bernhard notes). If a suspect note is found to be genuine a full refund by cheque will be made. However it is a criminal offence to knowingly hold or pass a counterfeit bank note without lawful authority or excuse.

Wonder if the cashier took it home :rotfl:

As a side note, from what i can find it should have still had the watermark and thread, so not entirely sure why they would refuse it :S

    OP statesThis:

because the cashier believed that it was fake and she had put to lines on the watermark and she confiscated it.

    and

Also she had used a scanner that said that the note was fake

so nothing to do with age of note.

The scanner is nothing clever, it does not "recognise" anything it is just a uv light. Fake notes glow in the uv light.

My point was that if indeed it had both the thread and the watermark, how could she possibly tell it was fake? Unless she was a complete divvy and didnt realise that the measures we have today for detecting forged notes havent always existed. Just because its not legal tender doesnt make it fake.

Maybe seems a bit harsh for one note but they could have at least offered to call the police or provide some proof that they have retained the note.

Then again i never trust anyone! So maybe its just me that would ask for one of the above.

This bit suggests the cashier didn't just assume ti was a fake because it was old:

Also she had used a scanner that said that the note was fake

At one point, they were A4 size. Wallets were enormous.
