TV out of warranty from Tesco

Does anyone have any experience with how Tesco deal with large items out of warranty?

I have an LG 42" Plasma TV, bought in February 2009. It has stopped working so I phoned Tesco who are to send me out a form for items over 12 months old.

They say that if I get an estimate now it will make it easier for when the forms come but when I went to the website of the company they have recommended, it costs £52.88. I'm worried about throwing good money after bad. Will Tesco refund this estimate cost as well as the cost of repair?

The guy was quite vague on the phone.

Has anyone had to make a similar claim?

"If a fault is caused by accident, misuse or negligence, or it occurs outside the warranty period, it will not be covered by the manufacturer's warranty. Service estimates for an item not covered by the manufacturer's warranty will be chargeable. An estimate will be emailed (or sent to you by post if we do not have an email address for you) and confirmation of acceptance is required within 10 days. Where such acceptance is not received, the item will be returned not repaired and a charge may be payable."

Sounds like they wont refund the estimate OR the cost of the repair.

Notwithstanding the above, you are covered under the Sale of Goods Act. In general, a piece of electronic equipment is expected to last for at least 6 years. If you have had a year's use then you can expect to pay 1/6 of the cost when new in order to get an equivalent TV that will last another 5 years. It is up to the retailer how they achieve this. They may choose to send yours for repair or to exchange it for a new or used model. Either way, you shouldn't have to pay more than 1/6 (plus whatever it costs you to return it to the shop).

Of course this is only very general guidance as every case is decided on an individual basis in court. But, if you were to take the shop to court, it gives you a rough idea of the likely outcome.

If you make this known to the shop, they may treat you accordingly.

I managed to get it going myself by something of a fluke. I will start another thread detailing that in case anyone searches this forum in future.
