Natwest Student account 2010/2011: We want your feedback

I was given a student account with Natwest yesterday along with a £500 overdraft. They did insist on me getting a student credit card though, "just for emergencies", which I don't intend on even touching. I'm hoping my railcard will be here before the 17th of September otherwise I'm going to have to buy my own.0

I opened the account in 2009 towards the end of my first year (so didn't get the railcard) and they gave me the full (at the time) £1200 limit. In sept I asked them to increase it to £1400, the maximum for second years at the time, which they did after another credit check.
They also persuaded me to get the credit card, which they gave me a £350 limit on. I notice some people are saying they were told they HAD to open the credit card, you should not have to agree to the credit card to get the current account, this sounds like pushy sales people trying to get their commission, so be sure you know what you want when you go in and don't agree to anything else, or do it online to avoid the hard sell. The rate is pretty high on the card and the limit is small, but its good for emergencies at the end of the quarter as long as you pay it off in full when you get your grant, as budgeting on a quarterly basis rather than monthly is not always easy.0 -
I was wondering - i am currently with Santander Student Account, about to enter my 3rd year (of 4) at university. Will i be able to (after closing the Santander account) open the Natwest one and receive the benefits (ie railcard)?0

Not sure about the other benefits, but the railcard is available only to students starting first year0 -
I applied for my student account on line 2 weeks ago as I already have a current plus account with them.
I havent heard a single thing about the student account, my account is still exactly the same.:TIs thankful to those who have shared their :T

I received an email today allowing me to get my free student railcard. Brilliant.

Do you already have online banking? Because I didn't hear anything, but when I checked my online banking and looked in the account details bit at the type of account it was, it said there that it was a student account. Nothing else appears to have changed though, I need to go in and speak to them!0 -
I have banked with natwest for years and after constant bad service I am finally changing my account but its only as I'm becoming a student. Should have done it years ago as i think Natwest are terrible and only interested in the sell sell sell (hence giving cards out)

Cleared £15,000 debt whilst being a student full time, bought a house, all whilst working full time.... it can be done!0 -
Like Greyray, my son also opened a NatWest student account with the promise of the free railcard in August 2009 which he is yet to receive despite several phone calls and visits to the branch.
I have now given up and will be getting him a railcard myself.:(0 -
You know they don't send one automatically? I remember when I did it I sent my photo to a unique email address, but I'm sure there were other ways of doing it. The letter could be easily missed in all the bumph they send.0
