In your article, the Barclays hyperlink in the table links to the Graduate account at http://www.barclays.co.uk/Currentaccounts/Otheraccounts/HigherEducationAccount/P1242557963888 whereas I think it should link to the Student account at http://www.barclays.co.uk/Currentaccounts/Keepitsimple/StudentAdditionsaccount/P1242557963772

Also the Natwest link links to RBS and the RBS link links to RBS's graduate account!
  • Hi. Thanks for doing the guide. Clydesdale Bank offer "Overdraft facility - up to £1,000 in the first year and up to £3,000 for the remaining years of your course" and i was thinking of going with them, does anyone have any feedback about there student account?

Thanks, I've corrected those links :)
  • In your guide you say you lloyds tsb outlaw having another student account. Was this true in the last quide?...i based my choice on the last guide in order to get things done way before i needed the account. So can i have another account.
Also on the sight it says 'To apply for the Student Account you must:' not 'to have' so as i already have a lloyds tsb student account may i apply for another student account that doesn't outlaw having another account.
    cheers tom

ps one last thing, being young but with good credit history in my short time what credit card would you suggest getting? (thinking cashback/reward for big purchases in the lead up/start of uni). i already have a lloyds tsb platinum, ok rate but no rewards.
  • Morning All,
I don't know if this is the right forum, but here goes....

Would current/recent students and their parents think the convenience of a local bank branch to be at all important?

i.e, The co-op bank may be one of the top student accounts due to the overdraft on offer..... but there are not that many branches. Only seems to have one branch in city centres. So would this be an issue if the student/parent does have a problem which can only be sorted face to face with bank staff?

    Thanks

Spending my first year on campus at uni I found the bank being on campus quite useful, mainly for when I want to pay money into the account. I must admit that I used is less than 10 times per year, but it certainly saved £3 bus journeys to the city centre every time I wanted to deposit small amounts.

My suggestion: if there is a bank that you want but isn't on campus, online banking can be a saviour. Set up online banking with the student account and also a normal current account with a bank situated on campus (that also has a online banking facility). Then, every time you want to deposit cash/cheques, do so at the bank on campus then use online banking to transfer the cash to the student account.

Do any student account pay interest? Are they any good? Would they also give on overdraft - just in case! thanks Beth

Is it possible to have 2 student accounts? I know it would probably take a bit of money juggling, but are there any t's and c's to say you can only have one?
We must all suffer one of two things: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret and disappointment

Thanks, but you still need to change the RBS link to http://www.rbs.co.uk/personal/students.ashx :)

Santander, HSBC and RBS do, but with strings attached - see the table in the article for details. If you've got spare money then I would recommend opening a seperate savings account (see http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/savings/savings-accounts-best-interest ) and transfer the money via online banking. Just because you have to deposit your student loan into your student account doesn't mean that you have to keep the money there for any length of time...

See the table in the article, specifically the row "Do T&Cs outlaw opening a student account with another bank?" - some acounts forbid having another student account but others don't. Make sure to read the T&Cs of both accounts carefully before doing this.
