Spiders - Please help!

Hi all - I really need your help!

We live in a garden flat and it's the first September we have spent there - needless to say now that September is here the place is full of spiders and I am really scared of them. Just this morning one large one scurried out from under my wardrobe when I went to get my work clothes and I was petrified. I managed to fling a tupperware put onto it and I weighted it down so Mr EL can handle it when he gets home from work... even walking past it still gave me the creeps, even though it was not going to get out of there!

I hate being reduced to a pile of nerves worrying where any other spiders might be - is there anything I can do to reduce them apart from closing all the windows? As it's a basement flat that will not be great as it needs to be aired...

Thanks for any advice you can give :o

  • I've recently seen on these tv auction channels pest control boxes that you plug in to the electric supply. They are supposed to give off a low frequency buzzing sound which deters all sorts of pests, including spiders. I suppose that could be worth a go. Good luck!!

Kim and Aggie suggested wiping the walls over with a small amount of citronella oil as apparently they smell through their feet (or something like that) and don't like it.

I usually get em with the hoover. Hepa filters usually mean I don't see em again! ;)

We seem to have loads of baby spiders at the moment - uggh just hope they don't stick around long enough to grow bigger!

Edit: Mum and Dad's cat used to eat them and in the evening he always saw them first and started playing with them so we had advance warning!! :)

  • I've had a pair of the pest magic things for 6-7 weeks and they seem to do a good job. Not 100% but not far off.

Also, I'd go everywherer with the vacuum. ie corners of ceilings, lift the edge of carpets. This should get rid of most then the pest magic will control the levels from that point.

  • Thats excellent, I think I will get on of those. We live on the edge of the countryside and the house is overun!! (according to my ds). They do not bother me at all and i hate the thought of anyone kiling them, but I know if i'm not here they will get squished. Hopefully with one of these they will get a second chance.

    thanks

I've heard that spiders don't like the smell of conkers, maybe you could put a couple around your house, wherever you think it is that they are getting in. I have conkers in the wardrobe to keep the moths away, I haven't seen any spiders in there either!
  • Hi all - thanks so much for the help - I wrote this post then went off and searched Quidco for gadget sites - 5 mins later I found that gizoo.co.uk had a spider catcher for £7.95 (the same one shown on this post) and as I couldn't wait up to 2 weeks for the IWantOneOfThose voucher mentioned above, it's great I ordered it today as should arrive this week. So many tiny spiders around too - don't know if this gadget will get those but at least it's something... citronela sounds lovely, but can't wash every wall with it at the mo!

  • I have a bull terrier who loves to eat them!!! I think he actually likes it when they try and get away :)

The other day I heard him growling and came in to see he was giving verbals to the BIGGEST spider I have ever seen.. I swear normally he chews them up in seconds.. not this one.. it made a dash for his toys - then he got angry and ate it!!!

I have two different electronic pest repellents in the kitchen and they don't work on spiders (or mice for that matter). The only thing I know fully repels spiders is chestnut wood. It's about the only wood in the world you will never see spider web on.

Hmmmm. Gadget looks like a friendly way of getting rid of them but what if it doesn't fully hold them and they fall and run??

I think I trust a glass and a sheet of card more. At least you can make sure they're outside before they run!! ;)
