Problem home insurance - please help

Hi All

I'm having some trouble with my home insurance.

I recently had to make a claim due to my kitchen ceiling falling down, which unfortunately means that I have now had 3 claims in 3 years - with a total value of just over £1000.

My current provider Sheila's wheels has sent me a letter advising that they are unable to provide me with insurance after my renewal date.

The cheapest I have been quoted so far is £47 a month due to this "adverse history".

I have a few questions:
- Does sheila's wheels letter now count as "being refused insurance", and should I therefore declare this on all future policies?
- Would anyone advise just taking buildings cover?
- Anyone taken out policies without declaring previous claims?

Any other ideas?

I can't believe I'm being penilised for using a an insurance policy for the purpose it was designed!

Thanks :j

I don't think you can be refused insurance in advance of asking for it, if you said "can I renew" and they said "no" that would be a refusal. I suspect there might be differently worded questions that might catch you out so take care to answer all questions honestly.

Don't know about just building cover.

As for taking out policies without declaring claims you would be better spending the premium down the pub. If you don’t need to claim then there is no difference, if you did need to claim the insurance would keep your premium and tell you to bug ger off, at least my way you get a few pints out of it.

As said above be careful of the questions a new insurer may ask - ie they may ask if an insurer has declined to accept or RENEW your insurance.

It doesn't mean that you can't try to get a better quote - maybe try some local brokers. They might be able to find an underwriter that will undertake a "higher" risk.

What were the claims for? If you have had, for example 2 claims on buildings and 1 on contents, you could possibly try to get some quotes on separate policies. So you would declare the claims on each without going over the 3 claims limit on either component of your insurance.

I've no idea if this would work out any cheaper for you - you would need to get a few quotes. I would never advise not disclosing claims and you would possibly have to disclose that Sheila's Wheels have declined to accept your renewal depending on the wording of the cover questions.

Probably your first priority is to get the building insured but unless you can afford to write off your contents, you would need to get cover for them as well.

If you look on-line and get a few quotes you can always ring the insurers and ask for their advice.

I would probably look for a good local broker to assist with this. If something major had happened at your property you don't want to end up with the policy being invalid.

    Hope this helps.
