I found it hard to believe that TalkTalk (and others) can do this but is definitely something to bear in mind before switching to a supplier who installs their own equipment.
Using their own equipment is the way they keep their costs down and can offer a cheaper service than BT. It isn't anything underhand and not just some sort of ploy to tie you in (although that is often the effect of it).

Don't forget that macman says return to donor (BT) is free - I thought that they charged but that may only be if the line is inactive. I think you need to ask BT about this as if you just cancel TalkTalk it may lead to you having to pay whereas maybe getting BT to cancel for you avoids the reconnection charge (this is all guesswork on my part - maybe macman will know if he is around).

AFAIK a return to donor is only free if the line is active-a disconnected line will incur a reconnection charge, which for BT is the same price as a 'new' line.

    Hi All,

To clarify the Return to Donor is a free service. I have seen occasions when BT have advised charges for this but I think this is when they are inadvertently asked for a new line, rather than the Return To Donor process.

In terms of contractual commitments with the Return to Donor this depends on what services are intended to be taken with BT. A BT agent can confirm this at the time of the call to request the RtD.
