Magowans tyres

I had something similar at Magowans in Carrick. I was getting an exhaust replace and somehow they managed to snap a bolt and couldn’t complete the job that day. I had to bring the car back the following morning.
On the plus side they didn’t charge for the job and I got a new exhaust for free. Would have costs in excess of £150 otherwise.
Hopefully you can get it sorted if nothing else at least the original work should be free or substantially reduced.0 -
You have NEVER known a wheel nut to snap ????
My word you must be lucky cos its a common problem !
As explanation - you say i would have only FOUR locking wheel nuts......Nope , i have NO locking wheel nuts because as i explained to you in my FIRST post , i did away with the locking type and replaced them ALL for ordinary wheel nuts.
So yes , i HAVE been driving round with three nuts on each wheel since my mechanic failed to tell me that he couldnt replace two as they were snapped.
Is it dangerous ? Yeah it most likely is .... i know im female but even I had guessed that much !
Now...your comment on an MOT tester removing the wheel trim to check... i really cant answer that comment cos im not sure what you mean by it ? Are you assuming that im going to drive around from now on with 2 wheel nuts missing ? My husband has went today and purchased two and has now fitted them on my wheel so you dont have to fret....
If you still want to hear the "other side of the story" id advise you ring Magowans and get it straight from them!
I really don't know why I deserved that!
No. 1 I did say " I am sure it can happen, but never to me." NOT that it is impossible!
No. 2 There is only one locking wheel nut fitted per wheel, therefore if you where charged for 16 then you were overcharged.
No. 3 My reference to the MOT was a general comment and not directed at you, all I was meaning was that this is a serious issue but I have never seen a MOT tester checking wheel nuts or studs.
Obviously you realised the danger or you would not be concerned about it!Dave0 -
To avoid this happening i had ALL 16 wheel nuts changed to "ordinary" wheel nuts. I had the new wheel nuts fitted by a mechanic about 7 weeks ago whilst he was doing repairs to my cv joints etc.I said that i USED to have locking wheel nuts (as in ONE PER WHEEL) but because i alway loose the locking tool that comes with the car I REPLACED THE WHEEL NUTS (12 WHEEL NUTS AND 4 LOCKING ONES) WITH REGULAR ordinary nuts !
I.E i do not have locking nuts on my car !
What I was saying was that originally as you posted you had 4 locking wheel nuts and 12 regular ones? Then you paid to have the 4 locking nuts + 12 REGULAR wheel nuts replaced with 16 REGULAR ordinary nuts :think:Dave0 -

I 'think' what Dave is trying to get at is:
He knows you only have 16 regular wheel nuts but did you
a. get every single nut replaced i.e. 16 in total
or
b. only get the 4 locking nuts replaced and left the other 12 in situ?0 -

That's what I don't understand. I think your mechanic is taking advantage of your blondeness. Your mechanic would have advised that their is only 1 locking nut per wheel. The other three are standard. So he should have said to you that it was pretty pointless changing the other ones. Love to know what he charged for that.
I would say everyone else agrees to this0 -
Wheel nuts get overtightened all the time, usually by the eager young fellows who have airguns which make the job very quick and easy. Doing it by hand is far safer. They really don't need to be tight at all. Rub a little bit of copper grease around the thread, hand tighten, careful not to cross-thread, then tighten further with the tool supplied in your car - do it using just one hand maybe, that's plenty tight.
I'll put another vote in for Gilnahirk Tyres btw.
Getting trading standards involved, or at least threatening it might help - they've caused damage to your car and haven't offered to rectify it, and their complaints procedure is 'poor'. Bring your husband with you to the office...0
