sorry for your awful experience but i can recommend Gilnahirk tyres and exhausts, being female can be a daunting experience going to a garage but they have only ever been great and very reasonably priced would highly recommend!0

My hubby says to ask....
did you see the mechanic in magowans snap the bolts?? If he snapped the bolts when putting the tyres on then it means the torque setting on the gun was too high and that's what snapped the bolt.
If you want to ask Magowans when during the tyre process this happened, you can but they will obviously say it happened when taking the tyres off. If they do say this, then they can be challenged as to why they didn't come straight to you about this, rather than wait until the process of changing the tyres was complete.

OK, so the bolt that snapped this time was either over torqued or cross threaded.
Is the most recent snapped bolt still embedded in the hub? If it is then it can be looked at to see if it was cross threaded and therefore snapped as a result.
Are you a member of RAC or the AA? If you are, they can give you an independent report on the damage if you wish to pursue the matter further. (again, this advice from hubs, I'm not an expert on cars!)0 -
No problem, don't take any guff from them and if you can, see if your mechanic who did the work for you the first time will give you a statement just incase you need it.0

To avoid this happening i had ALL 16 wheel nuts changed to "ordinary" wheel nuts. I had the new wheel nuts fitted by a mechanic about 7 weeks ago whilst he was doing repairs to my cv joints etc.
have confirmed this with the mechanic who fitted my new bolts just a matter of weeks ago....i left the car with him to replace all 16 bolts but as he couldnt get the two which had previously snapped OUT , he replaced the other 14 and then forgot to mention the 2 he couldnt do.....
Sorry but something does not sound right here, In my many years and mileage of vehicles both personal and company I have never heard of the studs being snapped, I am sure it can happen,but never to me.
If locking wheel NUTS are being replaced with normal hex heads, there is only one locking nut fitted per wheel = 4
I would like to hear the other side of the story
Oh just a thought? but surely only 3 nuts on a 4 nut hub would be dangerous? I have never seen an MOT tester remove the wheeltrims to check!Dave0 -

its sort of Dundonald direction, i know it might be a bit out of the way - it is for me too but its worth it for piece of mind. I usually drive my car there and there is a bus stop right outside where i can get bus straight into town for work and back again in evening to pick it up.
There have been very few garages i have come out of and not felt like i have been fleeced or over charged and this is definitely one of them. I went last week with very bad brakes, had pads and disks replaced, there was a scary noise coming from my engine but it was just a loose filter or something which was fixed and also the lever used to open my bonnet had slipped out and i had difficulty openning and closing it and this was also fixed all for £120. I know if i have gone into any of the big dealer garages i have been charged for every single piece of work and part even if it was something very minor.

Joanne, have heard of studs ringing before and this was due to overtightening at one time or anther, it might not have been Magowan tyres fault, your mechanic may have overtightened them to start with and started the process.
One thing that I would be asking of both my mechanic and Magowan tyres is if they used a proper Torgue wrench to do the final tighten on the wheel nuts and if they had what torque it has been set at ? If you want to be really good I would also ask for a calibration certificate for the wrench as these items are meant to be calibrated every year.0
