Does anyone know if it cheaper to use a gas fire without central heating in a room or better to buy a pay and go calor gas stove and use this to heat room instead of our 3 bar gas fire? I will want to use on daily basis through winter months as my combined gas and electric is approx £180pcm and last winter my gas bill was £900 per quarter despite not having it on 24 hours a day and having an electric cooker!!!! and we desperately want to cut down on fuel use and try not to use the gas much if at all! if I can find alternative heating source it would help, but need to know how a 15kg calor gas bottle compares to piped gas through our fire?? We rent so cant swap to a solid fuel stove or change the gas fire, and we cant put in double glazing etc to make the house more energy efficient, its a period semi with 3 beds and one reception and kitchen and I think our fuel bill is outrageous... so need to make changes that we can afford and will help cut costs, I thought of a calor stove as we can move it from room to room downstairs....................Incidently we are with EON the one of the cheaper gas suppliers...

Mains gas will be much cheaper than 15kg Calor. Depends how much you are paying for both gases, but the Calor could cost 4 times as much as mains gas.
Simply saying EON is a cheap gas supplier means nothing without saying which tariff you are on. Have you entered your usage in one of the switching sites to see if you are with the best supplier and on the best tariff for your circumstances?0 -
Calor gas will make your home wet with condensation, imho.
Have you looked into using thick curtains as a form of insulation for the windows, and asked the landlord about getting loft insulation fitted - there can be generous grants for this so it might not cost very much. Using door curtains can help keep the heat in too.
Even getting his permission to do this yourself would save you money.
Economy 7 tariff for storage heaters perhaps?
I'd get out some old bills and look through them and check your tariff regularly on Uswitch etc.
We are £100 a month for our 3 bed semi, build in 1970 with partial double glazing, we use thick curtains on the windows that aren't double glazed, have cavity wall insulation and a floored, insulated loft.
We don't heat rooms that don't need it, just keep the doors on them closed. We have no heaters on in the bedroom unless it's really cold, and have gradually reduced our ambient temperature by about 3 dgrees since we fitted a digital thermostat some years back - having a cardi on and using a blanket over you when vegging out watching TV definitely means you can keep the house a bit cooler overall.Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19
