Moved house...no reception/coverage but cannot get out of contract....

Hi all

I recently moved house and in my new house there is no vodafone mobile coverage.

I have a contract with Vodafone which expires in May 2011. I rang to discuss this with them and they said there is nothing I can do. I explained that I use the mobile as my main phone and that it is therefore of little use to me if I cannot use it in the house. They said it was tough luck and that the contract could not be ended sooner.

Before I go bite on a bullet, I thought I'd ask on here whether anyone has had a similar experience and can offer any advice. I feel that the phone is no longer fit for purpose as Vodafone do not provide a service in my area. But I don't know how things stand formally or legally.....

Many thanks

Max

  • One solution is to buy a second home where you can get the signal!!!!!!!
Sorry for the sarcasm but felt it was needed.

Not much help I'm afraid but I can see Vodafone's point.

As for the phone not being fit for purpose - surely that is down to your actions not Vodafone's ? And it was fit for purpose when you first got it so not sure that would still apply anyway.

I could be totally wrong on any/all of the above mind ;)

If you have BB at home then you could get Vodafone Sure Signal

Think its £5 a month but not certain ;)

No mobile co. guarantees 100% coverage, so it is not grounds for terminating your contract without penalty.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • You're about the third person this month to ask this question and you've all got the same answer: you moving house is outside the control of the network provider and, therefore, you have no grounds for getting out of your contract. Your only way of getting out of the contract is to buy yourself out.

    100% Correct.

  • This is getting beyond a joke. Why do people seem to feel it's ok for them to cancel a contract just because they moved house?

OP: Either chomp hard on the lead and gunpowder or strap on a pair and buy one of THESE.
In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move.

I'd re-enforce the suggestion that you could get a "vodafone suresignal" if you have broadband in the house?
Maybe they'd let you drop down the tariff scale (drop extras) to reduce the monthly a fee a little (though this may be up to them & may depend how long you've had the contract)

I think you pretty much have no rights here, you can just ask nicely and see if there's any way they can comprimise a little.?

Basically if you want flexibility/no long term commitment go for PAYG or a monthly rolling contract -- but don't expect cheap handsets. The monthly fee over 12-24m goes to pay for not just the service (which is just a monthly increment) but more towards the actual HW cost.
