On the Beach - Is it Legal

Is this legal
Went on the ON THE BEACH website to book a holiday, filled in all the relevant boxes and the total came to £585. I accepted this and it asked me for my credit/debit card details, I filled these in and press proceed. Then came the problem it asked me to complete the extras I required ie baggage and meals etc. The baggage was £16 per person each way, hand luggage was 5kg per person so I had to pay for them, this brought the total to over £700. Is it legal to add extras after youve paid for your holiday . Why did they not tell you about the extras before the took the money off my debit card . I tried straight away to cancell buthad to wait 5 days to be told the cancellation charge would be £345. i have used this company before without any problems but they have just changed their website recently so BE VERY AWARE

  • I always use on the beach and you are advised in the small print of extra costs that may incur.

Be very aware of small print but I know what you mean it does seem annoying when you think you are getting a bargain and you arnt.

i am always aware with these that baggage and meals are going to be added. I never get meals unless going long haul, boots meal deal for us!!

  • I have no problem them asking me for extras but it should be before they take your money

In fairmness there is a big yellow highlighted box marked "important information" before you click on "book now" which does highlight exactly those charges and that they are optional (ie you can add them yourself later if you want) like they are on Easyjet own site for example.

I can imagine your frustration with yourself that you didn't see this before you booked but not really OTB fault?

Agreed. You should not be charged until you have been informed of the full amount. OUTRAGEOUS AVOID USING THIS COMPANY. ON THE BEACH!

Never use a debit card for payments other than general groceries - always use a credit card to ensure extra protection!!

why use them anyway. dont they book you with low cost airlines, they do the same flights almost.
  • I suspect they may be the next to go......
Always on the hunt for a bargain.
  • I had flights etc booked with flightline (through Kiss apparently but you are not told this at the time?). I tried to book new flights pretty sharpish this evening, unfortunately onthebeach was by far the cheapest, still more than before. If we have to pay more we will have to cancel the hol anyway ....
I picked the flights, then had to add £90 for baggage ........ and paid. Then my receipt says I have now made a provisional booking which they hope to confirm in the next 48 hours. Do they not have online/realtime links?

has anyone else booked through otb and had problems - provisional order cancelled or, cynical me, increased in price?????

    thanks

A few years ago I rang up about an advertised price for a holiday by On The Beach...unbeknownst to the guy at the end of the phone, when he put me on hold to check the price, I could still here everything he said.

It went something like this..."Got another Mug ringing for the advert price...when will these idiots learn"

Came back on "Hi Mrs Triker, just let me check through a few more details and I'll price up the holiday for you"

    I kept quiet...

I then heard him take another phone call, put that lady on hold and heard him say 'Stupid f****ng cow, harrassing me about the advert, I'll leave her on hold for a bit"

He then came back to me....I hung up.

I would NEVER recommend On the Beach....EVER.

No, after what ive heard on here i would never book with any of these thomson/thomas cook wannabes to be honest. Theyll never be giants like the above mentioned (though id never book with them either - but at least they dont try and hide their ridiculous prices).
I think with the recent collapse of sun4u and goldtrail people should be more wary of these companies.
Book your flights with ryanair and hotel direct!
Everyone who thanks me when ive helped will get a 5% share when I win this weeks Euromillions......:p
