A bit of advice about smartphone wanted

Hi all, I recently won a Samsung Galaxy S through a comp posted on one of the other forums on here, and not sure if it,s going to be much use to me. The problem is that I,m on Asda payg network, and would only really want to keep the phone to use as a satnav. Can anyone tell me if it would be expensive to use for this purpose as I understand that Google maps etc. need to use internet to access the service. I know that it would be cheaper to get a contract sim, but I refuse to sign my life away with contracts unless absolutely unavoidable. Can anyone point me in the direction of a payg sim that would be cheap for internet, or should I sell the phone. I only spend about £10-15 a month on calls and texts so dont mind paying a bit more as long as its not prohibitive to use for internet.Thanks in advance

The cheapest VF pay monthly SIM which includes internet is £20pm.

Dont know about other providers.

Thanks for your reply but I,m only looking for payg, not pay monthly as I assume that is still contract

I have a t-mobile payg sim... and if I top up £10 a month i get *unlimited*internet for the next month..

Its a 30 day contract, you can cancel at 30 days notice.

Thanks kevsan, that,s useful. Spiro, I know you,re trying to be helpful, and for that I thank you, but I don,t want any sort of contract due to horror stories of people having their phones stolen or lost and someone running up huge bills which they have found themselves to be liable for

if you only want to use it as a satnav then just turn the 3g data off, use you wifi signal at home to get updates etc, and for the satnav download copilot it stores the maps on the phone so you dont need to connect to the net to get directions, it costs £19.95 from the android market, alot better IMO because if you are out and about and you lose signal then google maps will stop working.

Or get a giffgaff sim, its pay as you go but you can buy a goodbag at £10 that lasts a month and gives 100 mins, unlimited texts and unlimited internet, and it really is unlimited, no caps nothing.
You can get the goodybags for £5 at the moment

That's a bit drastic isn't it. For every person who loses their phone or gets it stolen there must be 10,000 who don't.

If you only really want a Satnav, sell the phone for a couple of hundred quid and buy a Satnav for much less than that and pocket the difference.

I keep seeing people post about giffgaff and their 'unlimited' internet. In just over a month (1st October) it will cost 50p a day or around £15 a month for around 1gb of their internet, so it's not worth it in my opinion.

Thanks Snakeeyes 21, thats a big help. I,ll look into that. Max, I want it to be dual purpose as I already have a satnav in my van and a phone that I carry too, but having both in one piece of kit is more convenient. As to it being "drastic" for not wanting a contract because of fears of theft/fraud, it,s not the only reason I don,t want a contract, but with my luck, if I was in a marching band, I,d end up with the piano.

That's for people who don't have a GoodyBag. At the moment, EVERY customer gets unlimited internet for FREE regardless of how much credit they have or whether they have a GoodyBag active or not. From the 1st October, those customers who don't buy a GoodyBag will have to pay for their internet, while those who have GoodyBags (£10 or more) still get their (truly) unlimited internet.
