problem with PC world is they will take no responsibility even if its within warrenty if it goes wrong. They will fob you off with lies that the manuafacturer prefers to directly be involved with the user. Total rubbish its just so they not have the extra work or costs of sending it to the manufacture and then when repaired contacting you to come and collect it, Thats if they bother to send it quickly in the first place.

Ps I cant find the Laptop in PC world at all to even see what the specs are. They might say its the same just to get you in store, But I cant even see that model and I searched.

Serious I would check what you bought is the same, Cause the specs they have fore close the that amount are not the same Dell i5s they are i3s or lower

yup, can see you definitely regretting that decision, also suggest you consider yourself as having zero warranty as for the level of repair service you can expect I think it'd stand a better chance of getting fixed being left in the monkey enclosure at your local zoo....

Well I'm not planning on the machine breaking and yes I did check the speck against Dell and to me it appeared to be exactly the same.

I accept that there are a lot of horror stories doing the round about PC World, but I thought the machine was worth the money and that's why I bought it there

the cases are identical its the insides that differ and PC World couldn't tell their Routers from their elbows.

That about says it all.... and illustrates the difference between yourself and the OP.
She is planning for if and when it breaks down. So after sales service comprises an important part of her decision.

I think you mean Acer not Asus. Asus don't go wrong as a general rule and even when they do, Asus CS is top notch.

Personally I wouldn't touch Dell at all but I guess by your comments about the warranty that you are happy for it to go wrong (as they usually do).

No it was definitely Asus that they were talking about (2 year global warranty) - and I was surprised, because I was told that ASUS are actually very reliable and that they are one of the only companies that make their own machines. I will still look into it.

Toshiba used to as well, not sure now.

As for Dells, you're much better ordering by phone and haggling - especially the warranty.

Current 'offer' is 1 year extension for £90, but I know several people who got 2 years for that price.

The Dell return-to-base repairs normally have a 2 week turnaround, but better to have an onsite warranty so you never lose sight of your laptop. Dell Outlet units have the same warranty as a brand new unit. Try ecomputers (google it, they are an Ebay shop) - they also sell refurbs and new, boxed cancelled orders with full warranties also.

Btw, last Acer I took apart was built entirely from Asus components - I was pleasantly suprised at the quality.

  • Got an email reply from dell outlet today saying that the warranty was not upgradable. Also, DELL seem to not want to budge in terms of the online prices anymore. Not a penny, or a MB of ram, or even a days exrta warranty.
The ecomputers shop have higher specced laptops (so no cheapies) but htey seem like good deals as they come with 3 year onsite warranty (did I read correctly????) If so then I am guessing this is much better value than buying the same laptop from Dell outlet directly...
