About to buy this dell laptop - last minute suggestions?

Options
I am about to purchase this laptop for work (I only need it for email/internet/loads of music files)

It is a dell studio 16inch and has:

Core i3 2.26ghz
4gb ram
1gb radeon graphics card
500gb hard drive (7200rpm)

It is £579 - can I get any better specs for this price? I feel it is maybe a bit too much for what I need but considering that lower spec laptops are not that much cheaper I thought I might as well go all out so to speak.

Any reccomendations?

Use topcashback to get 7% cashback off the NON VAT price too.

For the specs I really doubt you will get better, I have a 1 yr old studio and still runs great.

Studios have the graphics card which is mid range so other than the top games you will have enough power there, also its good for graphic programs.

Thanks Davester - I didn't know about this cashback site!!!! Do you know how long it takes to get back the money?

The only thing I was thinking of was the possiblity of bank holiday sales on Dell which usually happen - so I am wondering whether I should wait for a couple of weeks.

    Cheers!!

If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

I'm another vote for it being way over-specced for your needs...plenty of capable lappys out there to do what you want for £200 or more less than what you appear willing to pay

check out ebuyer, dabs and one or two others...even the argos outlet on ebay-12 months warranty and decent spec machines around £280-ish normally :)

    Thanks all for the replies.

The only thing other than email/internet and word that I need is enough space to put mp3s on (which I don't think even comes near to about 50GB of memory and considering most HD's are about 250-320gb I don't think its a problem).

I thought about Dell outlet but it wasn't all that much cheaper BUT I have a question - are the dell outlet machines covered in the same way (12 months warranty with option to extend?)

My techie friend tells me that Dell are the only guys in the UK who will (should anything go wrong) have my laptop back to me quickly. I have seen a lot ASUS lappy owners complaining abot over 4 week turnaround for repairs. My main concern is having the option of a reliable warranty/repair service - and I was told DELL had this. But as you know by now, other than the basics, I dont really know much and this is the first time I am buying my own PC/Laptop thingy...

I think you mean Acer not Asus. Asus don't go wrong as a general rule and even when they do, Asus CS is top notch.

Personally I wouldn't touch Dell at all but I guess by your comments about the warranty that you are happy for it to go wrong (as they usually do).

Extending the warranty will bring the price up to at least £704. You can buy a laptop that fits your needs for £264. :) Even if the laptop completely fell apart after a year(very unlikely unless you drop it from a great height), you could buy another and still save money.

Buy a laptop that fits your needs, not just the 'latest thing'.

Here's a copy of a post I made at beginning of month
I had wanted to buy the Dell 1764 because it had an i5 processor, 4 meg memory and a 500 Hard Drive, the only thing putting me off was Dell's price of over £700, it was way out of my budget range.

While searching for a machine with the same speck I happened to land on the PC World site and discovered that they were selling the Dell 1764 at £599.97. I contacted PC World and asked if it was the same speck, or different from that advertised on the Dell website, they confirmed that it was the exact same speck.

So with over £100 saved I bought from PC World

Don't know if the same offer is on, or if you could stretch that far, but so far for me it is proving a good machine. I accept many people have an issue with Dell and after sales service.
