Please help, have password protected 2 files and can't remember password. Is there any way I can crack this without downloading software that I have to pay for?

You've really answered your own question! If there was a way that you could crack the password without downloading software, then why would people bother writing software to extract the password? If you are using a recent version of Excel (that is, after about Excel 97) then getting the password is a difficult and probably very lengthy task.0

...and the problem with finding password crackers is that the quest takes you to some very shady places.
I found an excel password remover that worked some years back. (I wanted to modify a spreadsheet that my accountant had supplied but for reasons best known to them it was password protected - I suppose I could have asked but thought soddem).
Located it again - no guarantees - http://www.straxx.com/excel/password.html0 -
If it's just locked cells then you should be able to open the files with open office and un-lock the cells.
If the whole file is locked then you can get boot cd's that unlock.
Quick google found this site - http://www.petri.co.il/forgot_administrator_password.htm0 -
down load a program called mailpassview from the internet i might just find it for you

If I were you I wouldn't try downloading password crackers, you might find that you end up with bigger problems than just locked files. Some of the sites which offer these things are too dodgy to risk using.
Perhaps look on Download.com as I think they check everything they host for safety.0 -
I've used the one linked to by kwikbreaks in post #3 above for years with no problems.0

I might be able to tell you how to do it with no password cracker software involved:
What version of excel are you using and can you still open the spreadsheet?0 -
