Car just bought not what I thought

I went to see a car yesterday but when I asked the car salesman about it he told me that it had already been sold. Before speaking to him we noticed they had another Focus there which we looked over and for the age it seemed in very good condition. When I went to ask him about this Focus he asked me if it was a Focus I was after as he had an Audi he could sell me for the same price. I asked if it was a 1.6 as that is what I was after and he said no it's a 1.8. He then mentioned the Focus we had previously looked at and I said we had looked at that and it was very nice. He also said he had another Focus he could have brought round (apparently he had just bought it) for us to look at if we were interested so I said yes. Before I went back out on the forecourt I'm 99.9% sure I asked him if the Focus on the forecourt was a 1.6 and he said yes. I also asked him if it was an LX and he said yes to that too. I then said that's ok as that is what I was after.

When the other Focus arrived we looked at that but decided the other Focus, despite being older, was in better condition. We took it for a test drive and had another inspection off site and decided to buy it. I have put down a deposit and am picking it up on Saturday.

I have tonight rung my insurance company to swap my policy details and they have told me that the registration number I have given them is bringing the car up as a 1.8. I am worried now that having the slightly bigger engine it will use up more petrol.

If I ring them up tomorrow where do I stand with regards to believing that this car I was buying was a 1.6. I stupidly didn't double check that him saying it was a 1.6 that it actually was.

  • It apparently only makes a difference of about 2 mpg. Not huge in the great scheme of things. Try googling 'fuel economy focus' and the results should be fairly reassuring.

But the 'oh, we've just sold that one' is probably the number one scam car dealers use to get people in and sell them the one that's 'just come in this morning'.

Being more cynical (taking notes is useful) if there's a next time will be useful.

But Focuses are perfectly good cars, so I'm not going to spout doom and gloom on you. :D

    Hi Jojo

My only concern is that I will mainly be using it for short distances and that's when it will use up more petrol. I can't seem to find anything reassuring about the 1.8.

Oh and I know focuses are good cars, that's why I decided to buy one :)

No car is good if it's only used for "short distances."

Personally, I'd consider a push bike, or a real old banger.

The 1.8 Focus and the 1.6 Focus have similar MPG, both a typical Ford affairs, reliable but pretty uneconomical for what they are.

My 1.8 Focus is doing low 30's around town in mpg, I dont think the 1.6 would be much better its a heavy car.

    A 1.8 over a 1.6 will only drop your MPG from a 1.6 to a 1.8 by 2-3 MPG.

I would not worry about it, the tax is the same and as for the insurance it will be a few quid yearly extra, not much to worry about, specially if you really like the car :)

For short distances I don't think you'll find much differences in MPG between a 1.6 and a 1.8...they'll both be poor!

This statement is not only untrue but incorrect by any means.

Ford's are not the best on petrol, but there are much much worse MPG cars that will drink the petrol more than a Ford.

My car does 22-23 MPG for auto V6 2.5 litre engine - in a Honda Civic I had a few years back I was only getting 20 MPG with it being 1.6.

Statements look pretty similar to me.
