Hi sb - I used the light brown sugar and it was fine, I didn't use as much as the book said though as we prefer it more sour than sweet.0
-
Ok, I have all of the ingredients but was wondering which type of brown sugar people have been using?
I have both light brown and dark brown sugar, am I right in thinking the light one would be the best one to use?
Ta.
but I do make sweet & sour using another recipe, & yes I'd go for the light sugar, I think the flavour of the dark would be a bit too strong & overpowering0 -
Thanks folks, I used the light brown sugar and my husband thought it was great.
I prefer the lamb doner kebab and the sausage 'mac'muffin but I would still make this again.0 -
well the donner meat went down fantastically well! my dad and sister both told me next time they come round thats what ive to make them!
Tea for us tonight is the hamburgers and potato wedges. Wedges are marinading (book doesnt say to do it but i have!) ready to go in the oven at 5pm. Have added a few mixed dried herbs to the mix just cos i fancied it! Burgers are chillin in the fridge.
Last night i made the garlic bread and my word it was delicious! reminded me of a certain pizza chain and how their garlic bread tastes
Love this book! Next to be tried out is the one of the curry recipes. Unfortunatley this is doing no good for my dietbut im recommending this book to everyone i can!

Never ever use olive oil for deep frying..A: to expensive B: it does not have the burning point of veg oil
Veg oil is fine for deep frying as is sunflower, or the block cooking fat.
You also need the deepest pan you can find really as you don't want to over crowd the food (reduces the temp of the oil and then it does not fry it stews) and it will also be safer then a full frying pan of boiling oil.
The one thing to remember is drop the food into the oil carefully and away from you..ie lower it in first and then let go of the side furthest away from your face and don't panic
Also if the worse does happen do not try to poor water on the pan and do not move it, cover it with a damp tea towel and leave it alone.
Hope that helps
Thanks for the helpI'll invest in a deeper pan before I try these though, my pans aren't the deepest and it'll definatley end in disaster
I made meatball subs last night and this time put them in the microwave for 40 seconds instead of under the grill. It made the bread lovely and soft, which is how I prefer them
Keep meaning to have a go at the Big Mac's but always forget to buy gerkins. Theres loads I want to try but I forget to check ingredients before I do my shopping :rotfl:Even if you stumble, you're still moving forward.0 -

The mixed herbs make the wedges taste much better in my opinion.
Also if you are careful with the amount of oil you use they are not too bad health wise.
As for the garlic bread, pizzas etc, well I dare not try them!Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

I got this book out of curiousity, very impressed with the likeness of my efforts (based on careful study Kenny's preparation and recipes) to the taste of my favourite takeaway food.
He has done well and I'm sure he'll save many people a lot of money.
So far I have made the Megaburger and the Doner Kebab along with the very tasty hot chocolate recipe (which chain is he emulating here?).
One recommendation I would make to other users; Kenny has gone all out to get these recipes spot on - including the use of preserved flavours and powders. After all fast food is just that.......fast. And at times expediency leads to sacrifice in quality in many places that charge high prices for food. At home why not make a few substitutions and use some fresh ingredients? Next time I make the Kebabs I'm going to chop up some onions and garlic and take my snippers to the fresh herbs on the window sill...
The outcome will alter the flavour but might be healthier.
Keep on saving....and cooking!0
