Just been told by o2 that iPhone unlimited data ending for OLD accounts too
Hey MSE,
I've just been told by o2 customer services that the unlimited data that they've been offering with their iPhone plans is ending for *all* customers from October, and after that it is to be capped at 500MB/month.
I'd previously heard that this was the case for *new* contracts and people who switch to the new tariffs, but I'd also heard that anyone on an old contract would be allowed to keep the truly unlimited data plan until their contract expired (i.e. after two years).
For example: guardian.co.uk/technology/2010/jun/10/o2-iphone-tariffs-unlimited-end
and also: blog.o2.co.uk/home/2010/06/offering-fair-and-transparent-access-to-mobile-data.html
The customer service rep seemed to think there was no possible reason for me not to switch to the new tariff, given that ALL tariffs were being taken off unlimited data come October ( I triple checked this with him )
MSE, what is the truth here? Was the guy lying to me and I could actually have kept my unlimited data plan, or are the quotes above lying instead?
Cheers,
Ian

Asked what O2 will do if those data-hungry 2,000 do not upgrade to the new limited tariffs, the spokeswoman said: "Eventually they will come to the end of their contract, or they will want a new handset."

.Hi Andrew - if you're on an existing contract then you're welcome to stay on that for as long as you like. If you upgrade to a new phone however you would need to move to a new tariff.

I'm not 100% sure but I have been told my unlimited data will end on the 1st October even though I am an existing customer from years ago.0

Exact same as what I was told (which is reassuring) but, even so, the info I quoted from o2 would seem to contradict that
