It depends on the hardness of the water, but you notice a real difference within 4-6 weeks. Have a search on the net for electronic water conditioner and the various webistes will give you more information. What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -
Definitely ditch conditioner - it ruins clothes and makes towels less absorbent. White vinegar is the way to goI was born too late, into a world that doesn't care
Oh I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair0 -
I used to be a liquid girl until I went to Tescos last month when the big box (enough for 40 washes) of Ariel Actilift powder was on offer for £6 and it came with a free tub of Ariel Stain Remover powder. OMG it makes such a difference on my clothes. It gets rid of stains with such ease and leaves my clothes brighter. Think i'm going to stick to powder now, particularly as I didn't realise that the gels/liquids were bad for washing machines.0

My DH has psoriasis, so it makes a difference to his skin. I live in a soft water area though, so don't have to use a water softener.
Another fan of Lidl's products here. I use the Formil bio for my whites and in a medium hardness water area I use about 1/3 to 1/2 of the recommended amount of powder. It works really well. I use Lidl's Maxitrat liquid for colours and again using about half the recommended amount it cleans really well. When you look at the per kg pricing of the Lidl powders and compare them with supermarket own brands or branded powder you really see the savings that you make without compromising on wash performance.0 -
One tip i got (from a reputable washing machine repairman) for making powder go further in a washing machine is only to use 1 egg cup full of powder (sometimes the scoops you get with the powder holds more than an egg-cup). If you use any more than this, apparently you're basically throwing it down the drain.
I've used this tip for a long time - clothes are just as clean and fresh, and i get almost double the washes stated on the box.0 -
I use Ecover non bio and NEVER put in the amount they say. The manufacturers want us to use more to buy more-lol I never use conditioner and always do a maximim temp wash with a bio powder in but no washing every couple of months to clean out any gunk. Works for my machine.0

How does it take 4-6 weeks to soften your water? The water flows through your system almost constantly. If you fit one of these to the pipe below your sink, the first time you wash the dishes the water in the pipe will change.Jane_Blackford wrote: »Have a search on the net for electronic water conditioner and the various web sites will give you more information.
I did, and apart from the sites selling them, I found over 100,000 sites saying they are scams.0 -

It takes time to ionise all the particles is the answer I have just been given by my OH, and it has to work it's way round the pipework in the house.
Plese note it is not a softener, it is a conditioner. Softeners are the ones that pump salt into your system making all water undrinkable except from a special drinking water tap. These add nothing to the water.
If you fit one to the pipe below your sink then you are fitting it in the wrong place, it has to be on the copper inlet pipe, and it certainly will not work on plastic piping.
People say everything is a scam at one time or another. All I know is that it works in our house, we have a lot of happy customers, and if it was a scam why would most people selling them offer a satisfaction guarantee saying you can return within 180 days if it is not working . I don't know about other brands, but we have very few returns. What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -
