Ubuntu upgrade ruined my netbook-Help

Hi all, total newbie to ububtu which I have been using with dual boot on my netbook. All has been well until I went through the upgrade process from 9.10 to 10.04.
After going through the process the netbook restarted went past the splash screen and displayed the message
error: no such device:a0c6fc38-13ae-4af3-8fde-0a7e16bb6637
grub rescue>

I cant even go through the recovery options on the splash screen it just reverts to the above message. Can anyone help please?

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: Don't be so melodramatic. Your netbook is fine, it just has wrong information in the GRUB config files most likely. Have you looked at the Ubuntu site to see if this is a known issue?

Get on another computer download 10.04, stick the iso on a usb drive, boot from that and follow the instructions.

  • Thanks I will give it a go and report back later.
  • Okay I have downloaded Ubuntu onto a usb stick, when inserted into working laptop it recognizes Ubuntu and provides the options to install. When inserted into netbook after changng the boot order I get the line
    'Invalid or damaged bootable partition'
Any ideas as to how to overcome this? Thanks

Have you actually installed the .iso file onto the stick or merely copied the file to it? The stick will also need to be set up with the Universal USB Installer.
My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016). :(

For those seeking more detailed advice and guidance regarding small claims cases arising from private parking issues I recommend that you visit the Private Parking forum on PePiPoo.com
  • You delete the partition and install a new one.

iirc (and it's been a while since I've done an ubuntu install), you select one of the radio buttons to use the entire selected drive, click next and reformat the entire disk.

    Something like that :o
