the inspectors paid a visit to my boyfriend's mum's one day. bf's brother answered the door, and suggested they call another time, as his mum was not in. whilst he was talking, he was holding onto the greyhound, the most placid dog imaginable, as he wanted to run out of the front door.

cue a letter a week later from Tv Licensing, stating that their inspector was "threatened" and was told that Chris would be "setting the dog on them" etc.

    unbelievable.

I have never had any probs and I have been TV free for about 4 years.

I cashed in the licence as I got rid of the telly and video we had. Any way had a few letters. Told them that we had no telly.

Sent out a inspector. Hubby let him in he got halfway up the kitchen then said fine ok.

Wonder if he thought that our house rabbits at the time might have eaten him up. :rotfl:

Said we would hear from them in a year or so. Still waiting.

    Yours

Ah the good old TV licence people.

I'm currently a student at university living in the halls at my uni. About two or three weeks after moving in I went out and bought a TV licence. All done I thought, but no.

Cue about a month later when we started to recieve letters to each of us in the flat. I (at the time) was the only one with a TV licence and so we just ignored the letters as it said we didn't need to reply. Then two weeks later we got the threatening letters and so I called them and told them that I was the only one with a TV and I had a license and could they please stop sending us letters.

Then about a week after that we got the detector van arrive. The inspector, let himself into the block when someone else was leaving, and as out flat's front door was unlocked the guy came in and started to bang on all the doors to wake us up.

Cue me, not a happy person after such a rude wake-up confronting him. I offered to show him my licence and he then claimed I was a liar and a criminal so I asked him to leave. To which he claimed I couldn't do that. I then had to laugh as I threatened to call the police around to check his search warrent to which he scarpered quickly

Apparently people with the cheaper black and white licences get hassled as well. A thrifty friend uses a 35 year old black and white set. Inspectors came round and demanded to inspect the set, so he let them in. Aha! they said. You have a video connected to the set! That is classed as a colour receiving device! Aha! said my friend, and promptly ditched his video and got a dvd player instead, which apparently aren't classed the same way. So he gets to keep his b&w licence.

I have always paid my TV license on time. I got divorced 5 years ago & changed my name back to my maiden name, despite writing to the TV licenseing authority at the time & updating my name on every renewal they have never bothered to amened my name to my chosen one & insist on addressing me under my old married name. When I purcahsed a new TV last year (under my maiden name) the suppliers contacted the TV licensing authorty to tell them, as is apparently standard practise. Beacuse they have my listed under my old married name, even though the address hasn't changed, they keep writing to me to tell me in my maiden name telling me that I am unlicensed. I have responded to teh first letter in writing telling them to check the address as they will see I have an in-date TV license, to come & visit & I will willingley show it to them or to take me to court to settle the matter, and finally to get my name right & stop wasting my license fee. After a further 3 letters, all telling me that the next stage of action would be a visit, I haven't heard from them recently. I would welcome a visit just so that I can tell them what I think of them.

  • We recently bought a new freeview receiver in my partners name and then he got a letter from the tv licensing people saying that he didn't have a licence in his name at his address, had they bothered to check the system, they would have found out that I have a licence in my name at the same address! - I tred to take it out in joint names when I bought it, but they wouldn't let me - going by previous posts, I can't wait for the follow up!!!

Seems to me a lot of unnecessary paperwork on their behalf, pushing up the price of the licences for us!

Hi, I have exactly the same problem as the original poster. I own a house, but i'm renovating it and dont live there and so dont have a TV, yet constantly get very threatening letters through, saying that they will send "officials" round and I'll have to sign a statement etc etc.

I rang up the TV licensing people this morning and got through to a human!! She said "We send the letters through as we cant flag up on our computer that you havent got a TV, therefore no matter how many times you ring or write, we'll keep sending you letters... just ignore them."

There you go, straight from the horses mouth. As soon as they come in, bin them.

When we moved house 5 years ago - I rang them up to let them know that we were moving , the date we were moving and what our new address would be. Within a week of us moving in - a TV licensing woman turned up, said that we didn't have a license for this address blah blah blah. After digging through boxes - managed to find the license but I was fuming. Whats the point of ringing up to change details if they don't pay any attention. GRRR.

  • Same thing happened to me a while back. I was bombarded with letters from TVL demanding payment for a TVL which i already pay in my name but for one in another name, which isnt me. Totally did my head in. In the end i contacted them and told them to take me to court and i would counter sue for all the stress and upset they had caused as they didnt have a leg to stand on. Turns out someone gave a false name and my address when they bought tv equipment.

I am also being harassed by the TV Licensing people, how exhausting. I just don’t have time for a TV, my life is so much better without one. I rent DVDs now and then, go to the theatre and the cinema, and speak and interact with real people.

Why is it ok for this organization to harass people?

Seems illegal to me, a company allowed to harass people to buy their product when they don’t want it. I suspect most people find it easier to just buy the license so they don’t have to deal with the stress of it all.

I rang TV Licensing and asked if it would be ok for me to videotape the inspector as he walked through my property, they said no problem, so I think I shall, could be entertaining. Especially considering that I have access to a friend’s professional broadcast video camera, maybe it will put the inspector on edge.

I asked the TV Licensing people over the phone if they had ever had any problems with people being attacked and harmed by individuals pretending to be TV License inspectors, the man on the telephone refused to comment.

If 99.9% of the population own a TV (which the licensing office indicated) then why not just roll this fee into overall taxes and move on?
