the op is very quiet, i hope she's not banged up in alicante or something. i wanted to know what had happened
This made me smile! Thankfully, no, still safely at home in Essex, but sorry for the lack of an update folks!
Well I don't have a lot to add really, I wrote my letter as you know, and a couple of days later I sent a short Spanish translation of my letter as well - just to be absolutely clear of the facts (a friend wrote this as I don't speak Spanish unfortunately).
I also contacted a Spanish Lawyer who someone here very kindly put me in touch with. The lawyer said not to worry in the slightest as there is absolutely nothing they can do to me. This reassurred me a lot.
I have heard absolutely nothing further from the Spanish tax authorities, even though the 15 days quoted to me at the start has long-elapsed now. (I am taking this as a good sign...) I would prefer to have had some acknowledgement of my letter, but there you go. I am still thinking I might get a copy of the title deeds from the Registro - showing who has owned the property - so I can prove my non-involvement. I think this would cost me about 25 euros but would be cheap at the price really for my peace of mind!!
I travel to Tenerife next week so am hoping all goes well! I will let you know when i get back... if you never hear from me again though, maybe I will be rotting in a Canarian Jail somewhere!
Thanks so much for all for your help and opinions xxxx

Oo, er, missus! Cor, you’re bold and fearless. Well, you joke about it, but, er, famous last words! So have you ever done any bird? And in any hot countries?
My ex mate, who was a wrong’un and deserved everything he got, got badly beaten by the Spanish cops when he got nicked in a bar for a bit of puff and probably also his lairy violent beating up strangers for fun evil nastiness. My other mate, who’s a lovely bloke, got kidnapped in Madrid and held at gunpoint for 3 days when he took his fluffy hippy band there for a couple of gigs. They held him in a room with a bare lightbulb and no food till the band played the second gig and then they let them all go. And, needless to say, didn’t pay them their 3 grand fee. He said that none of them will ever go back to Spain again. Oh, I wonder why not.
Um, bullfighting?
Er, Franco?
Good luck. Let us know what happens and if you have a good happy hols. And whether you spend some or all of it digging this vein of radioactive ore. It would be good to know if you get to the bottom of this mystery if you do decide to put effort into chasing ghosts and scamsters...
Or alternatively end up having a major freak out.
So perhaps keep a diary of the whole thing and take a video camera with you and record everything including all the nice stuff of you sunning yourself by the pool, assuming you get to do some of that rather than just breaking rocks in the hot sun on the chain gang - as it’ll make a good book and Hollywood film when you finally get out of clink next year, assuming you manage to survive and don’t just get “disappeared” as happens to hundreds of thousands of hapless tourists all the time all round the world.
Tenerife, indeed. Well I never.
Good luck. Send us a postcard if you can. And, yes, if you want to or need to mobilise some MSE people then I’ll try to help and do what I can.0 -
Hello folks! Still a free woman!!!!!!! :j
Had a fantastic holiday in Tenerife without any problems, wasn't carted off in irons at immigration I'm very happy to say.
Haven't heard anything further about the property, still no clearer who owns it or why anyone wrote to me about it. The ONLY thing I can think is I have been advised that in order to buy a property in Spain, one must have a Spanish will. The link between me and this property is probably that I would have been (one) of the beneficiaries of this - it's just the only explanation.
I must say, after all this, I'm in no rush to visit mainland Spain but then I have no partiular reason to do so. The Canaries is not quite the same as mainland Spain I realise, so I may never know if the reason I had no trouble is simply because I wasn't visiting Spain itself.
The moral of the tale - don't run away and leave debts unpaid!!!!! (Like any of needed telling THIS!)
Cheers all for help and advice!
Hasta leugo!
